Volunteering in Community service 2022 held by Fountainhead school, SURAT – SERVICE

Everyone’s life depends on learning, and whether it be in academics or sports, learning is one of our fundamental rights. I chose to teach underprivileged kids from many nearby local schools football as part of my school’s community service project. Football is a highly popular sport in many parts of the world, so I undertook this experience to teach the kids as well as to increase popularity of this sport. Along with learning a new sport, the participating kids would also learn how to work in teams.

Learning Outcomes:

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

When I began teaching kids how to play football, I discovered that I was exceptional at helping them understand the fundamentals, such dribbling and passing. This is as a result of my ability to communicate with them in their language and make them understand. The majority of the children who had arrived spoke Gujarati but were unable to grasp Hindi or English. Fortunately, I spoke Gujarati extremely well and was able to communicate with them without any misunderstandings. On the other hand, I also encountered several difficulties that served as experience weaknesses. I found several techniques in football to be difficult. So I asked my peers for assistance so that I might overcome this challenge.

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Since teaching is a labor-intensive process that takes time and patience, I had to commit to it and keep at it. Making children learn football posed a difficulty and demanded persistence in order to effectively impart knowledge about the activity to the student. Therefore, from July 23 to August 7, 2022, 6 sessions of community service were completed, with two sessions taking place each week on a weekend (Saturday and Sunday). This was done in an effort to help those kids learn information efficiently. In order to ensure that the learners were fully informed about the sport at the conclusion of these sessions, I made sure to attend each and every session and to make sure that any knowledge I presented was accessible and easy to understand for the learners.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Together with those kids and my peers, I had to display social and teamwork abilities during this event. When we taught the kids, we frequently broke off into groups of three or four to instruct them. This was necessary because the batch had a large number of kids, so we divided them into groups so that we could teach more of them. Because some of the techniques we taught required the work of more than one person, teamwork was crucial in this experience. Therefore, my classmates and I were able to collaborate and communicate well, which allowed for an easy flow of information transfer to the kids. I had no trouble getting everyone to work together during drills and participate equally. The students who were learning were also well-behaved and disciplined, which made teaching easier and helped us keep a constant pace. To ensure that we do not miss anything, my friends and I helped one another.

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Every person living on this planet has a fundamental right to a high-quality education as well as to good health and wellbeing. These kids can benefit from physical education, such as football, to help them live healthy and fulfilling lives. They can learn about teamwork and the value of staying healthy by participating in sports. A high-quality education in academics or athletics may benefit them and improve their way of life. They can be guided in the proper direction and made conscious of right and evil by it. Sports can improve a person’s physical and mental health, as well as their social and economic status.

LO 7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions)

Children must be taught ethics as a crucial component of sports education. These kids were educated on the rules of sports, particularly frisbee. Sports ethics are crucial for ensuring justice and equality. We were able to instil the attitude of sportsmanship in each and every one of those kids learning frisbee by imparting the four fundamental characteristics of fairness, honesty, responsibility, and respect. The kids didn’t follow the game’s regulations or play with the right attitude during the first and second sessions, but with time, they gradually came to appreciate the ethics and laws of the game.

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, this experience improved my ability to work with others and communicate. Through this experience, I also develop the traits of a compassionate and communicative learner. Through this volunteer work, I had the chance to interact and have fun with kids from various backgrounds and professions.
