A place that provides a perfect communication platform and students a chance to explore the field of mass communication. Communication is used in daily life from speaking your opinions to providing information. One day, one of the students in the crowded collider asks, “What’s for lunch today?” while the other responds, “I don’t know.” I haven’t double-checked.” That conversation replayed in my mind that day, and I began to wonder if my school could have a proper communication platform where such trivial matters could be discussed, in addition to podcasts, poems, and stories. That’s when I decided to make that idea a reality

ON AIR is a school radio club that I organized. Our school never had a radio station before and I came up with the idea to start a radio club for our school. It taught me a lot of things throughout the process. When I started with this idea, I had to plan the whole process of how it is going to be held, and when it is going to be done and I had to come up with all the answers to the problems I came across with. Starting the club was out of my comfort zone. I never took on a leadership role and I wasn’t aware of how things would work. I had never led a team before and I never had to take on as many responsibilities in my name which made me nervous and a little anxious that I wouldn’t be able to meet up to the expectations. When I started the club I had to go to many teachers and go through different approvals and problems like; dealing with malfunctioned radios and permissions on what to add and what not in the radio. It was a time-consuming and challenging process.

I spent more than 3 months planning the whole process with ideas and how it was going to be executed. After discussing with my CAS supervisor, I made forms to recruit speakers and writers for the club. I went through the people’s example writings and asked the speakers to give a spot speech on how they are going to speak. I interviewed and checked each writer and finally, I selected two speakers for my club. I only took one writer for the club and I decided to switch different roles like writing the script other than managing and coming up with ideas. Finally, I came up with the idea to make an announcement every day. And we together planned what must be included in the script like news, event announcements, and lunch menus. I even came up with creative things which could be included in the script like Shayari’s

We, as a whole club, had to commit to the club. It was very difficult for us because other than the academic pressure, and extracurricular activities, we had to remove time to write a script for the club every day. The speakers had to practice and be present for the announcements every day. It was sometimes very difficult to manage everything together and we even missed our announcements a day or two due to our studies or other personal issues. But even with various obstacles, we were able to commit our time to the club. The club started on 4 July and we made our first announcement on 13 July, we are still going to continue this club after the project ends.

As a team, we had to work together, collaboratively to ensure that the club runs smoothly. working as a team, helped me to be actively participative as I can work well in groups. So, communication became very easy and I was able to get different ideas from club members to improve our work. Sometimes if the speakers or the writers weren’t available, we had to switch roles to ensure that we don’t miss any days. we had to make sure to match our schedules and take out common time to make this work.

Throughout the process, we created a communication platform that helped our school to communicate and make announcements in every grade. We made it easier for students to receive the information every day. But in this process, we had to make sure that we maintained the school ethics and we had to ensure we choose to maintain proper language and choose to write a formal script which doesn’t offend anyone because we were representing a school radio station, so anything we spoke on the radio reflected the school. Overall it was an amazing experience, it taught me many different things such as leadership, and communication and it also improved my writing skills. It helped me work in a team and inspired me to think creatively
