Cycling Club – CAS Project / Activity

I and my other fellow schoolmates went for 4 rides each Sunday to Dumas beach from VR mall. We did it for a month which included beach cleaning as well and in total, we covered roughly 20 km every time. The LOs covered in this CAS experience are LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5,LO6, and LO7.

Earlier in the lockdown period, I realized that I have to work on my fitness and stamina so I thought that Cycling would be the ideal exercise to improve my stamina and it also improves many other fitness components such as cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, etc. This covers LO1 which is “identify own strength and develop areas of growth”.

LO2(Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process) was also covered because we faced many challenges because it was difficult to go with 21 people because the main problem was that we decided to go in the monsoon and we canceled 2 trips due to heavy rain. And going as a group created a big problem because we had to select a time of departure which would be comfortable for everyone.

LO3(Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience) was also catered in this experience because not only I did do the cycling for myself but we also opened a cycling club where other volunteers could join us every Sunday and focus on their fitness as well. We made a group and as a team, we decided on timings which were comfortable for everyone, the place from where we could depart and etc. It looked easy in the initial stage of planning but as soon as the plan was initiated there were many issues because people were not coming on time and some people were left behind which made to learn leadership skills.

LO4(Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences) was also covered in the particular experience because cycling for 20 km is not easy for a beginner and due to lockdown, I did not focus on my fitness and diet so I faced many difficulties like body pain and felt a little bit dizzy for 1st two rides but after that, I did not give up and focused on my goal and completed what I committed.

LO5(Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively)was catered in the project as well because organizing the cycling club allowed me to demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively. I worked closely with other students who shared a passion for cycling to plan the routes, promote the club, and ensure the safety of the riders. Through this experience, I learned the importance of effective communication, teamwork, and collaboration towards achieving a common goal.

LO6(Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance) was catered in the project as well because

I was able to show my interest in issues of global significance, particularly those related to health and wellness, by starting a cycling club for fitness. Cycling is an environmentally friendly means of transportation that helps reduce carbon emissions and promotes a healthy planet. Frequent physical activity is essential for maintaining good health and preventing chronic diseases. Moreover, I was able to promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation while also encouraging my classmates to put their physical health and well-being first through the cycling club. I was able to support initiatives that focused on improving health outcomes and lowering carbon emissions by taking local action.

LO7(Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions) was catered in the project as well because we used to travel with a huge group of cyclists and that too on main roads on Sunday mornings. We had to make sure we did not affect other citizens. One more factor was that we had to make sure there were no casualties because while cycling on main roads there are always cars driving at a speed of around 60-70 kph which could be very dangerous.

All in all, it was a safe and interactive experience where I learned many skills such as leadership, communication and etc. I also improved my endurance and also learned how to work collaboratively.
