Crocheting (Creativity)

Description of the experience:
My great grandmother always encouraged me to learn how to crochet as she considered it to be one of the most essential skills for survival. During Covid-19, I had additional time to explore new activities, which is when crocheting really caught my eye. I could relate it to my great-grandmother’s words and gave it a try. I picked up a crochet hook and yarn from my great grandmother’s cupboard and made my way through the help of her guidance and youtube.

Learning outcome 1:

Identify your own strengths and develop areas for growth

I was able to identify that, learning through youtube was easier rather than following my great-grandmother’s instructions as through the help of youtube I was able to repeat the specific step several times, however, asking frequent questions to my great-grandmother seemed bothering to me. Initially, I was a bit frustrated when I couldn’t even achieve the basis of crocheting and had to detangle the pattern couple of times, that is when I realized that only practice could help me out through this. Hence, after practicing several times I was able to fulfill the requirement.

Learning outcome 2:

Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

This task required me to challenge myself as crocheting requires a lot of patience to see the final successful project. In the beginning, I was a bit impatient as I wanted to see instant results however as time went by it struck me that crocheting requires time, focus, and dedication. Missing one stitch or loop can create a big impact on the entire design.

Learning outcome 4:

Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

I began with making patches so that I get to practice on the basis. Eventually, I started making tops and cardigans that would give me an idea of what can be explored using this form of art. Next, I moved to make hats as the circular patterns are tougher than the usual ones. Currently, I am learning how to crochet graphghans as they are extremely challenging and require several attempts to get the perfect design.

Learning Outcome 7:

Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

Fast Fashion is one of the leading reasons for the pollution created on Earth. By crocheting my clothes I am supporting less fast fashion brands meaning that I am considering my actions and their impact on the environment. By not supporting fast fashion brands there will be less production hence leading to less pollution. This ethical choice makes me realize the change in my actions

Final takeaway:
Crocheting has helped me relieve my stress and had also taught me a new skill that could not only help me but the environment also. The SDG that I can connect to is No.12- Responsible Consumption and Production as my choice of crocheting my own clothes aid in saving the environment even if it is on the tiniest scale. The learner profile that I have developed is thinker, inquirer and knowledgeable as I picked up a new hobby, researched about it, learnt and implemented it.
