CAS entry 2: Creativity_ Participating in FSMUN 8.0

MUN (Model United Nations) are stimulations for schools and universities where the structure is based on that of the UN. They have different committees in place where the students take on the role of a delegate, representing one of the UN member states and speak about their country’s viewpoint. Each committee has an agenda regarding an international or political topic upon which the discussion continues and at the end, resolutions are drafted. It basically provides students with a forum to debate and grow their knowledge about the current affairs.

I myself have always been interested in learning about the current affairs and MUN gave me an opportunity to do so which is why I decided to participated in it. I became a part of the UNSC and our agenda was based on the ‘Afghan crisis’

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

This was my first experience of attending an MUN. One of the most challenging part was, since this was my first time, I wasn’t really sure how to go about the research part so I came up with my own set of research notes and in the process improved my research skills as well by learning about credible and unbiased sources . Also, it took me time to figure out the structure and the process that was being followed in the committee. In addition, I am not someone who is very outspoken so here I worked on my communication skills by putting my points forward, most of which I came up with on the spot listening to all the arguments and made my own speeches then and there.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working together

During the MUN, people make allies which is helpful when you need support from other parties to get them to speak in your favour. And the end of the MUN, we got divided in groups and had to sit together with our allies and were supposed to come up with a resolution and draft it. Brainstorming ideas here and coming up with solutions took a collaborative effort as having a multiple perspectives here help come up with the most effective solution.

Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Here, in accordance with my agenda, we talked about the Afghan crisis where we explored multiple perspectives and how the take over of Taliban has created a huge impact on the Afghanis. “Security” here is a major issue of global significance ,since with the new regime in place, it was the citizens of Afghanistan who were impacted the most and their safety is the one at stake here. It also brings upon the question of international security caused by the presence of terrorist groups in power.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

During the MUN, we looked into perspectives from almost all the UN member state present in the committee and evaluated their actions and their role in the crisis in terms of ethics (as in the extent till which their actions were correct). We also looked into the humanitarian crisis and the ethics of the new laws that were put into place.
