Creativity and service.
Introduction: inequality is bad for society as it goes along with weaker social bonds between people, which in turn makes health and social problems more likely. I was not able to do something about such a big societal problem although I was able to help as a volunteer at the Unitree NGO that helps children with down syndrome. I attended a Diwali party with the children and taught them painting on 3d objects, divas to be particular as it was Diwali. Apart from the paintings we also danced together and had dinner at the end.
LO1: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
The benefit here was simple, by working collaboratively the children were able to learn from us and they would take help from us at times. According to me having a mentor is always beneficial and over here I was the mentor for them so I used my communication skills at my best because teaching is more about communication than knowledge. I noticed that the paintings turned out to be better after working collaboratively than when the children worked alone.
LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance.
Despite advances in the understanding and general management of Down syndrome, the condition is still associated with a certain amount of stigma. It is important that individuals with this condition receive support from their family, friends, and society at large. My view upon this issue has been impacted after the event as I am now friends with them and think of them to be the same as me. This also made me realize about the millions of people who are suffering from down syndrome and how we should support them and be there for them until there is a cure.
Conclusion: My takeaway was that I made new friends and the event was an eye-opener for me as I now want to help these kids so from now onwards I’ll be going to all the events that Unitree organizes in order to do something about this issue.
