Deaf and dumb school – CAS experience

The main objective of this experience was to go to the deaf and dumb school, interact with the children (20-30) and paint diyas for Diwali. We were assisted by a person who knew how to interact with deaf people through sign language, we also learned certain signs to have a more effective collaboration with the children. We also donated certain daily toiletries like toothpastes, brushes, soap, buckets, etc. This mainly focused of providing service by donating and creativity by painting the diyas. There were 20-30 children and we were 6 people who worked together and initiated this plan.

Through this experience I was able to reflect something about being more collaborative as well as assertive, through these both skills I could talk to anyone and collaborate and communicate effectively no matter who the person is. Over the whole experience I learned to be more open and share ideas, through this there was even a conversation that made the experience more engaging. We shared ideas about the kind of colours we use on the diyas, and why they are usually bright and vibrant colours. This experience really helped me view the world from a different perspective, making me think upon how the world would be for the people who cannot hear anything. And the happiness of receiving a gift no matter how small it is, we gave chocolates to them by the end of the experience.

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

We were committed throughout this experience, to help these children and have fun time with them so that they also enjoy and find joy in that time of the year. We also showed perseverance, we had some delays in bringing the resources on time, however we used time management in order to use our times effectively.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

We used our collaborative and communication skills in order to effectively collaborate and engage with these children. By working collaboratively we made sure that these children were having fun and also using their creative skills in order to make their Diyas.

L7. Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

We used this as a source to demonstrate how we can use simple gestures in order to create bigger actions. These simple gestures can bring smiles to ones that need them. Since these children have always been treated differently it is important we share our experiences with them in order to create a change in the society.
