MUNs have always fascinated me, the incentive to meet so many new people and debate about some of the most important issues of the world, introducing new and radical perspectives, ideas, solutions, and whatnot. The whole process is inspiring and most importantly crucial, to shaping new leaders (LO 6).
I have been part of many Model United Nations conferences throughout my school life, but this time, with FSMUN 8.0 I managed to acquire an opportunity to serve as the Under-Secretary-General of the conference, and I was quick to say yes. The whole process helped me develop extensively as a person and as an international citizen (LO 1 & 2). We did experience a number of hurdles, from internal conflicts in the team to working on huge in incredibly short spans of time and managing to cover everything in a tight budget, all the while tackling the difficulties presented by the Covid situation. The experience taught us all to be better collaborators, to handle stress effectively, and especially as members of the Secretariate, leading the team to slowly construct an environment fit for learning while still staying enjoyable for the delegates (LO 5). Given that the event involves a many individuals working on such a large scale to talk about so many sensitive topics ethics was one of the major factors that came into consideration, a number of times disciplinary issues, and other conflicts arose between the core committee, volunteers, and delegates as well, during this time keeping our ethical principles in mind about treating everyone equally and without bias was a major contributing in how we dealt with the issues (LO7).
We worked on the project for just over 4 months (LO 4), during which we executed various tasks, from contacting schools to finding ways to improve in areas our predecessors lacked, collaborating with our supervising teachers, running around encouraging members of our team to push harder and making sure to the very last detail, everything was executed to utmost quality. Overall it was an incredible teaching experience and one that I would love to go through all over again.
