Devarsh Shah – CAS Experience – Basketball

I have been an admirer of Michael Jordan and it has always been a curiosity / hobby to play a bit of basketball and I was even more delighted to get an opportunity to play it with a few of my friends. Another exception for me was that I could use it as one of my CAS experiences. In order to enhance my skills in a new sport, first I would have to learn about the rules and limitations of the sport in order to understand the game better and so that I can grasp into the sport faster.

LO – 1 : Identify your own strengths and develop areas of growth. As a player of badminton and with some continuity in GYM I was able to improve upon my agility in the court and speed overall. Because of which I was able to move faster across the court with decent control over the ball. I also had to build up skills in passing and dribbling the ball. A glimpse of which can be seen in the images attached below. Apart from building upon new skills I also had to improve upon the existing knowledge / skills like quick response and movement, I had to adapt those skills according to the requirements of the game.

LO – 2 : Demonstrate challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process. At first I had a lot of challenges such as lack of ball control while dribbling and the ball not going into the hoop at the time of shooting as well as weak passes. Inorder to cope up and improve upon on the weaknesses I gave more time to specific practices of each one of them. Passing in general being an integral part of the game was practised on multiple days in a week. Ball not going into the hoop and hitting the rims every time was specifically very frustrating.

LO – 3 : Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. I initiated the plan to learn Basketball in late December with a very wauge goal of becoming better at basketball in general. But as I had more and more game time I got to know that I had to dedicate more time to specific things such as passing, dribbling, shooting and I had to plan the timeline.

LO – 4 : Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. I committed my time and effort into learning essential rules and regulations as well as the most important skills which are to be learnt in order to play good basketball. I showed perseverance by playing basketball everyday except for weekends for 2 months. Through the commitment and dedication towards the goal I was able to achieve some good game time in 2 months time.

LO – 7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions. Ethics in general would always play a big role in any form of sport considering fair play, rules, respect for other players. Ethics of Choices also shows if you choose to follow the ethics of the game or to override time and disrespect the game itself. After the choices you follow through on to the ethics of actions in which after making the choice you either follow the rules or you simply don’t.

Finally to conclude I can say that not knowing much about the game and starting suddenly was a bad decision, if there had been better planning I would have achieved better results although I am satisfied with what I got, but you can always make things better in some way. In all following the ethics of the game is must at all times. Without ethics there is no value in the game / of the game.
