CAS Experience – Beach Cleanup

Surat is considered to be one of the cleanest cities in India, however when we visit public places like beaches we see the actual reality. It loaded with dumped trash like plastics, polystyrene, glass bottles, etc. which is very harmful to the environment. Living in such a place would not only harm the environment but also every being alive. Hence, I decided to go on a beach cleanup drive with my classmates. During the drive, we not only picked up the trash but ensured that it by being disposed correctly by contacting SMC (Surat Municipal Cooperation) .

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

We went for the cleanup 2-3 times, to ensure that we made some difference. But, many a times our plan got cancelled due to heavy rainfall/ less volunteers. But we still showed commitment and continued to go for the cleanup whenever it was possible.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Normally working with a group is difficult for me, but during this experience it turned out to be interesting as each and every one of us was committed towards this cleanup.Working collaboratively made the work easier as the tasks were divided between us like who is bringing gloves or garbage bags, etc. Working collaboratively ensured that the task was completed faster and was more efficient.

LO 6 : Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

We engaged with several issues such as waste dump and land pollution which are major threat to environment. Plastic and styrofoam were the most common materials that we found while cleaning, both of which are not biodegradable. This can be consumed by land animals(dogs) as well as aquatic animals(fishes). Hence, it is essential for us to take care and clean our surroundings. Taking part in this initiative helped me become a more responsible citizen.

LO 7 : Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

While cleaning the beach we had to use plastic bags because other alternatives were not available, however, we ensured that the trash bags are later disposed properly and not left on the beach by contacting the SMC. Also polluting rivers is an ethical issue that directly, affects human health, hence it was important for us to take this action.

Final takeaway:

From this experience I learned that even small actions matter. If I perform this activity again then I will try to use reusable gloves and garbage bags. All in all, this activity brought a sense of accomplishment and joy to me.
