For a month, I took part in a beach cleaning event at Dumas Beach. I participated in a group of 21 people who cleaned up the beach and its surroundings every Sunday. I was able to achieve a number of learning objectives with this event, including:
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
I had to look into and choose a spot where the beach cleaning action was needed in order to start and arrange this CAS experience. I had to work with the group to plan and gather the materials and equipment for the activity. I developed my initiative and planning skills during this process.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
I cooperated with the group to clean up the beach and its surroundings during the beach cleaning activities. I became aware of the value of cooperation and teamwork in reaching a common objective. I also realized the advantages of teamwork because we were able to finish the task much more quickly and effectively than if I had gone it alone.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:
While I understood the effects of trash on the environment and the necessity for sustainable behaviours, this experience also showed my engagement with topics of global importance. I gained knowledge about how plastic garbage harms the marine ecosystem and how important it is to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
Finally, I gave ethical consideration to the decisions I made and the things I did while cleaning the beach. I took purposeful decisions to reduce waste and avoid harmful behaviors because I was aware of how my activities affected the community and the environment. I gained insight into the value of ethical decision-making and social responsibility through this experience.
Overall, the beach cleaning event at Dumas Beach was a meaningful and beneficial experience that helped me to achieve a number of learning objectives and skill-building goals. I am grateful for the chance to take part in this CAS experience, and I will continue taking part in programs that promote sustainable living and social responsibility.
