LO 6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Paper is something we use every day in our life without thinking about what impact does it create on our environment. Although it is a renewable and biodegradable resource, often it takes 10-20 years after the trees are planted for their first thinning (LO6). Considering this, when the opportunity presented itself, I decided to volunteer for the cause, to recycle old and used papers so that they are ready to be utilized by NGOs or governmental schools.
LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
All the volunteers were provided with paper pulp made by the team. So I had to mix the pulp in the water already there in a container, let the mixture settle on the wired frame, and lift the wired frame up so that the water can be collected in the container. Next, I had to carry the frame and flip it onto a drying cloth, soak all the excess water by using a sponge, lift the frame up, and keep the paper drying under multiple fans. Papermaking was a new activity for me (LO2) and I enjoyed the process quite a lot.
LO 5 Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Because we were a group of 10-15 students working collaboratively, we were able to make a lot of paper in a short period of time (LO5).
LO 7 Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
To recapitulate, I enjoyed the process and it was a very fulfilling service as we made sustainable choices (LO7) as we recycled paper out of old, used ones to be reutilized again.
