School radio – CAS experience

Speaking in front of people has never been one of my qualities. I have had stage fright since grade 6. As a part of my experience, I auditioned for the school radio speaker. I figured it would help me gain some confidence as well. I found the idea of school having a radio very unique and something we as a school have never had. I also worked as a writer when it came to editing the script. I demonstrated various skills like collaboration and communication with the writers and fellow listeners. The announcements always brought a kick start to the listeners, who would also know all the daily news and information with the lunch and breakfast menu.

L1 – Identify your strengths and develop areas for growth
Not much of a public speaker, and also an introvert. It was not the easiest to make a live announcement that the entire school would hear. But knowing that I have the specific skills, I learned and lot and gained much more confidence during the entire process. I have developed various skills like public speaking and writing as well. By the end of the year, I observed multiple changes in myself, from confidence to communication skills. I can now clearly communicate with my peers and teachers, and through the experience, I was also able to learn new words.

L2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills
In the start, it was a little hard to speak; I faced challenges when I misspoke and made errors while speaking. But as we did this every day, I grew comfortable, and the errors started decreasing with time. Through this experience, we also faced challenges in getting the script written on time daily, so we, as a team, worked on our hands and researched new ideas we could implement for our listeners.

L4-commitment to and perseverance
As much confidence and courage as I needed throughout this experience, I also had to ensure that I was committed to my goal and showcased the same enthusiasm to the listeners. As the speaker, I also had to make sure the speech was created on time and review it with the kind of grammar used.

L5-. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively,
Participating in my school radio has been an enriching and engaging IB CAS experience. From learning about the technical aspects of radio broadcasting to developing my communication skills, this experience has allowed me to broaden my horizons and step out of my comfort zone. Working as a team on the radio show was essential to its success. We all had different ideas, but we had to come together to create a cohesive show. We also had to work with the technical team to ensure that the sound quality was excellent, which involved working closely with them to identify and address any technical issues.
