CAS – Designing my room

An ideal living space for an individual should reflect one’s personality and character. While I and my family were shifting to a new home I took it as an opportunity to showcase my interest in designing and architecture as well as implement my creativity. I took up this experience to design my very own room from scratch. In this process, I developed new understandings relating to Interior designing throughout the period and was able to demonstrate the same. From tiles to walls to paint, I made sure that each and every element added to the room was well-suited and parallel to me. Similarly, I also made sure that the design is appealing to not just me but also to the people who come to visit. Designing a personalized living space as a CAS experience would give me a chance to think out of the box and enjoy the undertaking.

LO2 (Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process)

During this CAS experience, I faced difficulties in visualizing the exact look of my room. This is because, while designing I came across some elements as separate entities, thus I was not able to imagine how i would blend in my room. Also since some of the products were not available in physical form, it was difficult to make decisions and I relied heavily on estimations. Additionally, I also had to look up several catalogs of designs for my room, and shortlisting and selecting from those was a tedious task. So in order to take these challenges, I made an approximate sketch of my room and made a list of colors and designs of elements such as beds, and tiles that would reflect my personality. Doing this eased my decision-making process and I was able to overcome the challenges.

LO4 (Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences)

This experience also required commitment and perseverance throughout the span of time. Not only I had to design but also had to monitor the outcome of my design by regularly visiting the site and taking note of the progress. If in case some of the designs weren’t feasible I had to rework. Monitoring is required since there has to be no discrepancy between my idea and the execution by the workers. I tried to visit the site every Sunday following from the initiation of the work from the time when it will end.

LO5 (Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively)

Collaboration is an essential aspect when it comes to interior designing. Proper communication with the workers executing the design as well as the architect from whom we gain several insights is necessary for the success of the idea. In this experience, I made sure that there was appropriate communication being maintained amongst several groups, and they understood my perspective. Working collaboratively would yield an exchange of ideas that can be beneficial since it would pave a way for a scope of improvement.

LO7 (Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions)

Apart from the concentration on the core design, I also considered ethics as a major factor. I ensured that whatever elements were to be added in my living space came from a sustainable source and a company where work ethics were up to the mark. Similarly, it is my responsibility to observe the law, building regulations, and health & safety regulations and recognize ethics and choice of action.
In conclusion, this experience helped me develop my collaboration, Research, and communication skills. I was also able to develop my learner profile of being caring and open-minded. I was able to implement my knowledge of mathematics and design while undertaking this experience. All in all, it was a fruitful and a fascinating experience.
