I Cooked, Packaged, and Distributed food to homeless people around Surat. Ever since I was born, I have seen hundreds of people suffering from homelessness and starvation in this city due to meagre income. This led to me developing a soft spot for them, and I have always wanted to help them. Still, I realise that giving them cash could introduce more issues than solutions. That’s why I decided to cook and distribute food among the homeless throughout the city to at least give them a little help in their complicated lives, as it would be impossible for me to alleviate all of their hardships.
Learning Objectives:
LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
Before this experience, cooking was a relatively unknown science to me. Going into this, I severely underestimated the time and effort, not to mention the skill it took to cook Indian vegetables. It took me a lot of patience to wait for the vegetables to cook and even more when donating the food, as the homeless people were wary of me when I first went there.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
A new skill I learnt from this is some basic cooking and some roti making, in which I am still nowhere near perfect, but I can make them to my satisfaction.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.
Homelessness is a serious issue around the globe, not only in impoverished and developing countries but also in developed countries, including the United States and Czechia. I have always advocated for government programmes to alleviate homelessness and opposed their forced eviction from public areas. This was a significant reason I decided to undertake this project.
