Public Gardening (service)

Deforestation has been a topic of great concern in our ever-warming global climate, which not only negatively affects the scenic environment of the place, but also its entire biodiversity. To cater to this problem, I thought about planting plants and trees in my neighbourhood, believing that even doing so on a local level might help in the long run. This process of nurturing them by planting and watering them is something that I thought would be beneficial for society.

LO 2 – I developed new skills in the field of growing plants by learning about the concept of ‘horticulture’ through videos and knowledge from my parents. This helped me to identify the different growing conditions of plants and spaces where they are to be planted, including different humidities.

LO 3 – By using my previously gained knowledge, I was able to organize this experience based on the time and intensity of the tasks required for different plant types, and chose plants that were more suitable to grow in the moderately humid climate I was in. I also used a time-keeping and reminder app to help with the planning task of watering the plants, which was very important.

LO 4 – I had to commit to consistently watering the plants, even when I didn’t feel like it. However, it was slightly easier to commit to this experience than others because of the nature of it, as I do enjoy watering plants to some extent, and it feels peaceful, which positively impacted my consistency.

LO 6 – Sustainability is an important issue that I was focusing upon, as climate change is something that is happening due to deforestation, and by growing plants I was able to positively counteract the issue. Furthermore, this also relates to the SDG of life on land, which is one of the goals the UN hopes to achieve by 2030.

LO 7 – By taking part in this experience, I was able to promote the idea of sustainability to others, and in doing so I felt like I was ethically promoting the concept to my neighbours. Even though the impact of this was local, it made me feel like I had accomplished something, which was of positive ethical concern.

All in all, this helped me to improve not only my self-management and organisation skills by persisting in the planting and planning process, but also helped me give back to the environment and support the positive growth of Earth’s natural biodiversity, local that it may have been. I also feel like this is something I will carry onto my adult years, as it made me feel a sense of peace while contributing to sustainable development.
