When me and my friends had created a cycling club and we all went to Dumas, we also did beach cleaning there. All the cycling club members did the beach cleaning and we did that 4 times during our 4 rides to Dumas.
LO 3 : We also had to initiate a plan for this experience just as we did for the cycling club. We needed to decide dates and timings with which everyone was comfortable with. Along with that, we also had to arrange gloves and polythene bags so that we could do the cleaning.
LO 5 : Working with others in this case was very important for me. Firstly, I had to work together with the leaders of the cycling club to do the planning and distribute work such as bringing polythene bags and gloves. Secondly and the most important one, working together to clean the beach was very beneficial. Working collaboratively made the task much more simpler, efficient and less time consuming. Had we not worked together, cleaning the beach would have been a very lengthy and a time consuming task and we could not even do it properly.
LO 6 : Cleaning the beach helped us cater a very important global issue. Littering around the beach was a big problem in Dumas beach. This was making the beach dirty and was also affecting the ecosystem around the beach. The garbage was affecting dogs in that area as they tried to find anything consumable there and sometimes ended up eating the plastic bags, making it very harmful for them. Some garbage also reached the shore eventually, adversely affecting the life below water. By doing this service, we were able to cater to 3 SDGs; Climate action, Life on land and Life below water. Trying to solve these global problems even at a small scale made me feel very happy from inside.
LO 7 : While we were benefitting the society by doing this service, there were many ethical issues involved. The first being that we were risking the health of the members of the cycling club as the garbage might have been hazardous. And in this pandemic, activities like beach cleaning are even more dangerous as the life of people around us might also be affected in case of any sickness. We tried our best to cater to this issue by making it compulsory to wear mask and gloves while cleaning for everyone. We also maintained social distancing and washed our hands thoroughly after the beach cleaning was done.
All in all, the service of doing beach cleaning made me feel very glad from the inside as i was able to help the society in a way. What I learnt from this experience were leadership skills as we had to lead everyone during the beach clean up.
