Model United Nations (MUN) is the simulation of the UN General Assembly, the structure is based on that of the United Nations. Model United Nations provides different committees in a place where students take the role of delegates, representing a country which is a member of the United Nations. Each committee have different agenda based on politics, environment, international events, crisis etc. These agendas are further discussed to understand the country’s point of view and in the end, the resolution is drafted. MUN benefits students to develop leadership skills, research, writing, public speaking, problem-solving skills and develop their knowledge of current affairs.
I am very curious and interested in knowing about world current affairs, MUN gave me an opportunity which is why I participated. I became a delegate of UNOOSA and our agenda was based on ” Long Term Sustainability in Outer space”
Before starting, I knew that it would be a bit challenging for me because it was my officially first MUN. I was very afraid because I have poor public speaking skills and I have to speak up for my country’s stance on the agenda. It was very difficult for me to research each and everything about the agenda because I did not have a proper structure for the same hence, I develop my own personalized research method and researched. This helped me to classify sources between unbiased and credible sources. This helped me to build my research and writing skills. Furthermore, It was very difficult to understand the flow of the committee because everyone has their own counter-arguments with themselves. The major challenge I faced was public speaking because I was not confident to speak in front of anyone hence, to build my confidence I used to practise in front of the mirror, which helped me to build my communication skills.
During MUN, working collaboratively was the biggest strength because people make allies with other countries depending on the amount of contribution each country has provided keeping in mind the agenda of the committee. Forming an ally helps other delegates to support our point and talk in favour of our country, they also help us to state our point if we lack behind. At the end of MUN, we have to write a draft resolution paper where we have to collaborate with our allows and draw a conclusion about the agenda and committee. Brainstorming our ideas and working collaboratively took a lot of time because there were instances when the ideas were clashing and we needed to think twice before executing them also we had a variety of ideas which help us to gain more confidence.
Here in accordance with my agenda, we talked about emissions and space debris where we explored multiples perspective and how other countries contribute to the issue explored in space. The major global significance is “Space debris” and “emissions”. This global significance affects the environment and us, It possesses a particular catastrophic threat to humankind’s future in space exploration, due to the increased risk of collision with and damage to functioning satellites.
At last, we need to ensure that we dive into the perspective of all the UN state members presented in the committee. We respect all the actions which were evaluated by a delegate to resolve the issue. We also looked into the environmental crisis and the ethics of the new laws that were put into place.
