The water bottling process releases 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually. Disposable water bottle waste washes into the ocean and kills 1.1 million marine creatures each year. As far as the environment is concerned, I as an knowledgeable IB DP student tried to help the environment through a small-scale step of reusing plastic bottles which were used in the marriage of a close relative. I reused exactly 50 plastic bottles to grow plants in them in order to increase the amount of awareness of using plastic bottles. All the 50 water bottle plants will be distributed to friends and family members with an online PDF talking about the disadvantages of plastic bottles. People who are not techno friendly will be provided with a hard copy of the PDF, in order to save papers i have kept the primary source to provide information as PDF only in certain cases printed paper will be provided.
LO 6 is Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance. Due to the CAS Experience I was able to reuse the plastic bottles to grow plants in them as plastic bottel takes around 450 years to decompose in a landfill or if burned it relates toxic chemicals into the environment. Therefore, I decided to resume all the plastic bottles I could gather to grow plants in them. As an IB DP student we are always thought about sustainability, so I implemented my learning and took an initiative to grow plants in plastic bottles. Additionally through this CAS experience I better understand the disadvantages of plastic and so would not buy plastic water bottles and would carry my own from home.
LO 7 is recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions. Plastic that was created to help human is now being one of the most harmful innovation for the human health and for the entire world. Plastic is increasing the exposure of air pollution to humans. Hence through reusing the plastic bottles which are meant for one time use, I as an IB DP student is committed to change through ethical choice and action I have made through out the experience. I feel proud for being aware of plastic disadvantages to make right decision of reusing them baby changing the purpose of the plastic bottle. Through intense research I feel that the issue of plastic is way more than I ever imagined and now I will focus on sustainability through making right and sustainable choice and will become an responsible human being.
To conclude, this experience allowed me to research in-depth about the causes of plastic waste on the environment and enabled me to think upon the lines of sustainability so that I make ethical choice and actions. Additionally, I felt good helping the environment through reusing bottles and this decorated my gallery and will bring positivity in my life. I loved planting plants and help the world recover from plastic waste by being sustainable.
