Manali Trekking

Video Reflection:

Transcript of the video reflection:

My batchmates and I spent our summer vacations at Deo Tibba Base Camp near Manali. We walked a long and challenging distance. Deo Tibba Base Camp is a lovely campsite in the mountains near Manali. My classmates and I decided to hike up to the base camp to enjoy the beautiful scenery while also improving our health. I had never done trekking before, so I was very excited to do it. Trekking is good for us because it improves our overall health, reduces stress, strengthens our cardiovascular system, and improves our social skills.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.

During the journey, I discovered my own strengths and weaknesses. I discovered that I have good endurance, which implies that I don’t get tired easily and can walk a long distance without stopping. I also discovered that I can build good tents as we had to make our own tents at each campsite we visited while trekking. I was able to construct sturdy tents in a shorter amount of time and enjoyed doing so. However, I discovered that I am not good at taking care of myself and can become irresponsible at times because I frequently forgot to apply sunscreen and drink enough water during the trek which was vital. I believe that self-care is essential, but I am lacking in this area. While cooking food for ourselves on the campsite, I found out that I am not the best cook since I had no knowledge of cooking and messed up plenty of times.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Since I realized I wasn’t a good cook, I observed my friends and asked questions to learn more about cooking, and then I practiced a little with someone assisting me to improve my skills. This ability will be useful to me in the future. Due to my weakness of being irresponsible, I became dizzy in the middle of the trek, which prevented me from fully enjoying the journey. I used to get dizzy and throw up in the middle of the trek because I didn’t drink enough water or eat enough food for the trek. This harmed my health. To strengthen my area of weakness, I kept measuring the amount of water I drank and I used to eat every two hours. This helped me understand the importance of self-care.

Learning Outcome 4: Show Commitment and Perseverance in CAS experiences

Trekking is a difficult task, and I needed to be patient while planning the trek. To be able to complete the trek, I had to go to the gym every day and do trek-specific exercises. Trekking primarily requires endurance and stamina, which can be developed through daily exercise. It is difficult to gain but easily lost if you do not exercise for more than four days. I would not have been able to complete the trek if I had not committed to increasing my stamina. Also, while I was determined to finish the trek, there were times when we were all exhausted; in fact, only 7 of the entire group made it to the top of the mountain, and I was one of them, it was because I didn’t give up and demonstrated my dedication to completing the trek.
