Beach cleaning

There is a NGO called Project Surat where they take steps toward making the environment sustainable. One of their steps is to clean the dumas beach. Volunteers in their free time go to the beach and help collect the trash in cement bags. Once that is done, they give the trash bags to the SMC trucks and then the trash is assorted into recyclable waste. I always wanted to help make this world a better place. When I came across this, I knew this was the perfect opportunity.

Volunteering in this project helped me learn about the SDG 6th and 14th which are: Clean water and Sanitation and Life below water are the points which are not considered in the top priority list of the Surat Government. The LO’s I catered in the experience were 2,5 and 6.

There were a lot of challenges in this experience as this was very tedious work and very time consuming. Taking time out of the busy schedule of an IBDP student is very difficult.

LO 5 was catered for as this was a group experience. 5 of us were involved in this experience. All of us helped clean a portion of the beach. We went around 3 consecutive weeks and cleaned an entire portion of the beach which was full of plastic.

LO 6 was also catered int this experience as this issue is locally as well as globally concerned because it’s not an issue that is just restricted to the city or the country, it’s a concern for this planet. Our planet is covered by 71 percent of the water and if we don’t take steps to sanitize that water there’d be no clean water left for the future generations.
