CAS Entry 3: OC head for FSMUN

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Leading an event is one of the most important experiences for me. I’ve always loved taking part in organising committees of events but this time I wanted an exposure in the core committee. I did not have much experience in FSMUNs, I’d just attended one FSMUN in 2019 as an OC member. I got interviewed for the core committee member and soon I was designated the position of an OC head. All of the people in the core committee were very much like minded and we decided to make this MUN different from other MUNs. We got out of the way and made sure FSMUN 8.0 would be a success. Along with the delegates my personal contribution was planning, executing, organising and delegating work to the volunteers and taking an update on each one of their works. We were a team of 17 organising committee members and I had to manage them being an OC head. Working with a group of teens of the same age and delegating them work was not an easy task.

Initially, I used to get frustrated when the person allocated wouldn’t do his/her work so I used to do all the work by my ownself. I also had trust issues of whether or not the work done by them would be fine or not. That’s when I realised my weakness. My weakness was to delegate and work collaboratively along with the entire team. I learnt to trust people with their jobs and to equally divide the roles and responsibilities and encourage them to work towards it. My strength had always been planning and executing but leading was something new that I learnt.

I had organised an event (Musicana) earlier in Jan 2019 where we had a similar kind of situation and I’d yelled at the volunteers but my partners were there to pick up the mess that I created by yelling. Hence, this time while leading the team I felt productive because I learnt how to lead without any chaos! This undertaking was extremely important to me as this helps me figure out my strengths and weaknesses as well as prepare me for future events.

Working collaboratively along with people has always been a task for me because I’ve very different view points when it comes to methods of working. But during FSMUN I realised that there’s a way of convincing people to come on the same page and listen to ideas with an open mind because that is what will make me a good leader.
