Beach Cleaning | Service and Activity

I choose to do beach cleaning as a service for my CAS experience because I personally love beaches, and one of the most profound beach in our city is that of Dumas. But every time we to the Dumas beach, we see a lot of garbage all around the beach. This really disappointed me and my friends, so we took an initiative to clean the beach at least every weekend of a month. Our goal was to clean as much as possible and also motivate other people seeing us do the cleaning on the beach.

The LO’s covered in this experience are : 4, 5, 6, and 7

Since I decided to do this activity with a bunch of my friends, initially it was hard for all of us to match our schedules. Also we thought of cleaning the beach early in the morning every weekend, so it was also difficult to arrange transportation for the beach early morning. But we had a few meetings and sorted out our schedules and convinced our parents to take us to the beach every weekend for a month. We tried to stay committed towards this experience because it was not just about us, but was about our community as a whole. So, we were committed to go to the beach early morning, every weekend for a month and tried to clean as much as possible. Also, we were committed to motivate others to keep the beach clean by telling them to throw trash in the trash can. Having these commitments helped us stay on track and give our 100%.Working in a group was really helpful as it became easier to manage the resources needed such as trash bags, gloves, broom sticks and baskets. Also, as a group we were able to clean a larger portion of the beach. We learned and improved in our ways of cleaning the beach as initially, we used to drag the trash bag round while picking the garbage which was very difficult and tiring. So, from the 2nd day we decided to bring broom sticks and baskets, so that we could place the garbage bag on the side, collect garbage in bucket and then throw it in the trash bag. This made our process much easier. This experience can also be connected with global significance as we catered to the SDG goals 11(sustainable cities and communities), 13(climate change) and 15(life on land).

Overall, for me this experience was really fruitful as we were able to spend our mornings doing something good and help our community. I really enjoyed cleaning the beach with my friends and also I hope we were able to motivate the people who saw us cleaning and interacted with us.
