CAS entry 6: Service_ Feeding stray dogs

Earlier I used to be very scared of dogs, but since the time I myself had gotten one, most of my fear was gone and I had started to feel more strongly towards them and came to realise that they hold a very special place in my heart. Which is why I decided to feed stray dogs along with the help of few of my friends where we would choose a different location every weekend. This is a long term process and I am still continuing with it.

Learning outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Here I firstly talked to few of my friends who might be interested in feeding dogs every week and we created a group. Then, since I have a dog of my own, I know about the kind of food that should and shouldn’t be given to them so I made a list of the same and sent it to everyone. Then each week we decide on a location that we could go to and even decide on a time that would be convenient for everyone. We are usually there for an hour or so.

Hence, executing this plan required a bit a planning and collaboration in order to make the initiative successful

Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

In such an initiative, collaboration played an important role. If it would have been only me doing this task individually, it would have taken me a lot of time to feed all the dogs and carry all the food alone. But with a group, we are able to work more efficiently, productively and feed more number of dogs at a time.

And Although we do face difficulty sometimes when it comes to setting a suitable in accordance with everyone’s schedule, we ultimately do make it to the location on time.

The skills that I demonstrate during this experience is socialising and working in synergy.

Learning outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with the issues of global significance

According to the international trade development of the world organisation for animal health [oie] “The problem of free roaming dogs is certainly a global problem”. There are 200 million stray dogs worldwide. Shelters euthanize around 3 million dogs each year. A balanced diet is necessary for animals to grow and stay healthy, and starvation in animals can lead to diseases that can be fatal. It would be unethical to allow other significant life forms to suffer while humans waste resources.

As a responsible global citizen, it becomes our fundamental duty to contribute towards achieving the goal of ‘life on land’. Also After learning about the severity of the problem and seeing animals starve, I realized the value of food and made an effort to be more aware, responsible, and growing. I also gained more insight into the problem from my Global politics classes about species loss and animal extinction since it is a political issue as well due to the involvement of non state actors (in terms of protests made by them and the government actions involved)

And during this activity, seeing these dogs happy makes me feel really grateful in a way that I am able to provide for them. I absolutely plan to help more dogs and contribute more to resolving this problem by volunteering in NGOs in order to create a large scale impact.
