Swapper Stop was an event initiated by the Business Management and Economics team. The event focused on the concept of a thrift store wherein the main aim was to promote sustainability in the fast fashion industry through the use of waste mitigation strategies. The Waste mitigation strategies utilized were Reuse, Recycle and Reduction. For this event the teachers and the students were requested to donate certain items that were in good and usable quality, ranging from clothes to accessories , books and many more things. This was a barter system, where you receive points for the goods you donate and receive points to swap with other existing goods in the Store. This event was held to promote economic and environmental sustainability. My participation and responsibility in this event was to organize the event and to handle the decoration sector of the event.
Learning Outcomes Achieved:
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
As we were working together in a huge team, making decisions was really hard as every step we proceeded to intake for the event , we had to consider every action as a part of sustainability and each innovative idea had to be able to fit in the time frame we were working with. Deciding on the decor within the team was a difficult and arduous task along with seeking permission from the higher authorities for every idea we came upon. Additionally the time constraint for the completion of this project was quite less and in order for this event to be successful we had to rush things up. Even though all the challenges faced me and my team was able to complete the project successfully by being in a tranquil and collaborative environment. In addition I was able to gain communication skills and creative thinking skills.
LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Inorder for the whole event to be successful , we had to carefully plan and follow the initiated plan. Even though the initial organization and execution of the plan was challenging we were able to succeed due to effective communication and management skills. The planning and execution of the plan were a crucial part of this event in becoming successful. In Order to efficiently execute the plan we kept track of our progress and all other significant details through the use of a spreadsheet. Through the use of a well managed spreadsheet we were able to cater to all the criteria of the event and the higher authorities found it easier to access the progress of the event. Hence through this experience planning and initiating the event in the following way made the execution more serene.
LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance
The primary aim of this event was to promote economic and environmental sustainability and raise the concern of the fast fashion growing industry on the economy and the environment. This event assisted many individuals to realize and implement the ways of waste reduction and waste mitigation strategies and was a small step to a more green future.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
The ethics and choice of our actions will significantly affect the thinking of many young minds and individuals, directly questioning their decision’s impact on the environment and the economy. Even the resources we used for the event were deprived from used materials and waste materials. An example of the following can be we created a chandelier from waste bottles and created installations from reused pieces of clothes. These actions lead us to a more sustainable approach and to some extent also changed the thinking of many individuals towards a more sustainable future.
To conclude, even though we faced some challenges during the planning of the event, we were able to successfully execute the event along with addressing the message of sustainability in the fast fashion industry. This event led to positive repercussions in many students and teacher’s thinking about their actions and overall this event was a really amazing experience for me.
