Learning How To Do Icing On Cakes- Creativity

For my CAS experience, I decided to learn how to do icing on cakes. I’ve always been interested in baking and decorating, and I wanted to challenge myself to try something new. To start, I researched different icing techniques online and watched instructional videos on YouTube. I learned about different types of icing, such as buttercream and fondant, and the tools needed to create different designs and decorations. Then, I practiced these techniques on my own by icing cakes of various shapes and sizes. It was challenging at first, but with practice, I began to develop my skills and feel more confident in my abilities. I experimented with different colors, designs, and decorations, and I even tried creating my own original designs. Through this experience, I discovered a new passion for baking and decorating and learned that creativity is all about trying new things and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

Learning Outcomes In Focus:

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Initially, I thought that this would be extremely easy and hassle free, however It was extremely challenging to make perfect chocolate ganache flowers on a cake. I had to make sure that the cake had cooled down before icing it which I realised after the first time that I made flowers on a cake.

I watched online tutorials and read articles to gain a better understanding of the process. I then practiced my skills on a few small cakes to get a feel for the process and to develop my skills.

As I progressed, I began to encounter challenges. For example, I struggled with getting the icing to be smooth and even on the surface of the cake. I also had difficulty creating intricate designs and patterns with the icing. However, I persevered and continued to practice until I was able to overcome these challenges.

Through this experience, I developed several new skills. I learned how to create different types of icing, including buttercream, fondant, and royal icing. I also developed my ability to work with a piping bag and create intricate designs on the surface of the cake. Additionally, I learned how to work with different colors and textures to create a visually appealing cake.

Overall, this CAS experience helped me to develop new skills and demonstrate my commitment to learning. It also taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of pushing through challenges to achieve a goal.
