Education is an essential and requisite segment of our lives, one of the key aspects linked with education that assists an individual in self-growth is reading. With the consideration of education and reading being a significant part of an Individual’s life. Along with my friend, I took the initiative to conduct book club sessions for children who are not privileged to pay a really high tuition fee for their education. The sustainable goals of my project are aligned with Quality education. As the students of Ubuntu academy were given various sessions to interact and be provided with an education system similar to one of IB but at an affordable price. The children of Ubuntu academy are still developing reading skills and lack speaking skills.This project assists children of Ubuntu academy in refining their speaking and reading skills by making them enjoy reading and learning with the use of fictional stories and literature. These book club sessions will guide them to become better as students and will be an enjoyable event for them.
L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I discovered that my own strengths during the experience included. I was really good at communicating with children and explaining to them about numerous grammatical structures and vocabulary. I discovered that during my experience, my creativity in forming activities and planning was really adequate and it was quite beneficial during the book club sessions. The area where I have to improve was to explain contrasting terminologies to the kids and make the activity more understandable compared to their level.
L3- initiate and plan a CAS experience
In order for this event to be successful and with the main objective that the students should have fun during learning, we had to plan a lot of activities and the books that were chosen should have been easy to interpret. Moreover, for students to be intrigued by the sessions , my friend and I had to initiate a set of various interesting activities in every session and had to brainstorm ideas along with the teachers through meetings. As also classes were online due to the pandemic we had to keep several aspects such as student attention online and their participation online. Hence all these factors led us to initiate and plan a CAS experience.
L6-Engagement with issues of global significance
The issue present in this experience was lack of quality education or education, I focused on this area and provided students with inquisitive and fun sessions on literature and reading. This led them to enhance their interpretation and communication skills along with their thinking skills. As per their grade’s ability to perform, comparatively their power of thinking and speaking is quite low and moderate. Taking that issue in mind I wanted to assist and help them in catching up with the current flow of capability they should possess.
L7-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
The ethics of my choice led to many development changes in the young minds, students were interested in learning different concepts of grammar and they received quality education. These sessions allowed the students to grow and can be valuable and beneficial in the coming future as they will nurture as a character. Hence the ethics of my actions will have a positive repercussion in a students development and growth.
The learner profile attributes that will be catered to during this activity were communication, knowledgeable, reflective, and open-minded. Communicating with children was the key to this event being successful, reflective as after each session I had to procure changes accordingly to the level of input from the students. Open-minded was catered as it aided me to take up all perspectives and opinions of their children.
