PS: Basketball(CAS experience 5-Riya Bajaj)

I have been playing basketball for the past 4 years, I’ve been on various tournaments as have since my graph upscale as a player. However, there is always a scope for improvement, and I want to become a better team player so that I can contribute in a better way to the game. Basketball is also a medium through which I can maintain my overall fitness level. It helps me work on all 5 fitness components, speed, agility, strength, endurance, and flexibility. Especially while the world is still in a pandemic, it is vital for me to maintain good health and well-being.

LO1:Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Playing basketball is fun but while playing there are areas that need to be developed and some areas where I am good at. Firstly, talking about areas of improvement speed, I usually lack behind the while defending, the speed of running is required to block the ball from going inside the ring. Improving this would help make my game better. On the other hand, there are areas where I am good at teamwork meaning it’s easier for me to play with players as it’s always a win-win(either the opponent sacrifice or me) situation for substitute and while playing in. Also, these days due to Gyming it’s easier for me to shoot since the power of throwing has increased and the ball manages to touch the board. Now knowing about my strength and weakness makes it easier for me to know where to focus while practicing. One weakness that is improved to an extent but still needs to be worked on is the speed it has improved where I manage to reach to the other side of the court for defense. Since I had been playing basketball for some years and along with the first few classes, I realized that I could by 45-degree position, however controlling/center position was proving to be a challenge. It was vital that I improved my skills in controlling while maintaining my performance on the 45-degree position so that I could be a more flexible player and replace positions whenever necessary.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills
Playing basketball is not challenging but I am a lazy person so initially, it was challenging to become active. Now that I am used to it, it feels great to play. I haven’t played any sports like this before but yes I  started it in grade 8 and we had a pandemic for 2 years wherein I wasn’t able to play after it was challenging now it has been a new skill that I have developed. This helped me learn the skill of having balanced life as managing between studies and physical activity. Basketball requires a lot of dedication, it helped me improve the skill of being dedicated and giving 100%. Also, this challenge made me disciplined since playing games requires being disciplined

LO4-commitment to and perseverance
The activity was not difficult but at times it became. Recently this January, there was a spike of COVID, and the school changed the timing of PS from 8 to 9 so going every day by waking up early was difficult, and managing it to do every day was hard but the motivation of completing and showing dedication made me attend all of those days. The only thing that was committed is to be regular to attend PS and CAS and the dedication made me committed and perseverance made it happen. It’s easier for me to commit but being persistent is hard since I become lazy at times which affects it. Whereas showing commitment and perseverance is important for completion with quality.

LO5:Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
Basketball is a team sport, hence it’s very important that all 5 players work collaboratively in order to score points and restrict the other team from scoring. Many times we used non-verbal communication and sign language to communicate within the game so that the opponents would be unaware of our moves, hence scoring points was much easier. Above all, it is vital to instill trust in all players to ensure that the game functions well.

Summing it up, this experience helped me become balanced in studies and extracurricular activities. The highlight of this experience is that there were classes where I embarrassingly fell off which was funny but there was a cost attached to getting injured. Adding on there is always scope of improving the activity of playing basketball can be considered as successful but it still requires improvement in skills. Playing basketball is fun for me so this brings a sense of enjoyment with accomplishment. I learned from this activity is physical activity is equally important for your body. Similar would be applied ahead in life even if I would be burdened up with lots of work I will manage to spare out one hour for physical activity
