CAS Experience – Diya Painting

From several years, on the festival Diwali, I paint diyas for puja at home and office. This year also I painted diyas but thought about distributing it to people surrounding me and helping me such as maids and watchmen’s. During COVID each of them faced lots of difficulties and risked their lives to help us. So, this was a way of thanking them and giving them a moment of joy and happiness.

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

As mentioned before that I have been painting diyas for several years, sharing my art with others to make them feel happy was the goal for this year. Arts has always been one of my interests but I haven’t been very good at it. But while painting diyas my friend taught me how to add coats on the paint layer to make it look nice, which helped me develop my skills.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

In the past years I painted around 40-50 diyas, however this year I wanted to distribute it hence, had to paint more than 100 diyas. One of the challenges was to paint the diyas alone as it is very time consuming, hence me and a friend got together and painted them. Another challenge that I faced was completing the diyas on time. We started painting the diyas about a week before Diwali because it takes time to coat different layers on it. But till the last day, we had to work hard and complete it on time.

LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The planning process was very simple because only selection of diya and paints was required. We planned of painting 120 diyas, with base coat then actual colour and then touch of gold. Initially we decided to paint 60 diyas each day, but painting 30 diyas made us tired, hence it took us 4-5 days. Here organisation was very important, because we sometimes the time wasn’t suitable for one of us. But, as we planned things beforehand and wanted to complete the target of 120 diyas we organised ourselves.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Generally working with others is difficult for me because of clashes in ideas. But, for this experience it was very important. Painting 120 diyas alone in only a weeks time very difficult because of the time it takes to dry and repaint. Working collaboratively was very essential fo this so that we could complete 120 diyas before Diwali and distribute them.

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

This pandemic has affected several peoples financial status and mental health. People who work for us, risked their lives to come daily at our house just to make money and feed their family. Therefore giving them painted diyas was a way to make them happy and to promote a good health and well being.

Final takeaway:

This experience bought a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment to me. This was because, painting diyas with my friend was different than painting alone. Also after distributing diyas, when I looked at their smiles, it felt that my effort was successful.
