Unitree – NGO

Finding a suitable CAS experience turned out to be easier than I anticipated. I was on the hunt for something fresh yet meaningful, and I came across an organization that supports people with Down Syndrome to engage with their community. Volunteering for this cause was an act of kindness, and I felt compelled to be a part of it. My role as a volunteer involved contributing ideas and planning weekly Sunday activities, and then participating in them. Our goal as volunteers was to connect and befriend the people with Down Syndrome.

LO2: Finding a suitable CAS activity was easier than expected for me, as I was looking for something new and meaningful. I came across an organization that focused on helping individuals with Down syndrome to engage with their community. I was excited to be a part of such a selfless cause and became a volunteer. My role involved brainstorming and planning for weekly Sunday sessions, as well as interacting with individuals with Down syndrome to build a friendship with them. Volunteering was a new experience for me, as I was used to participating in events rather than assisting in the process. Stepping out of my comfort zone was a challenge, as socializing with individuals with Down syndrome was different than what I was used to. Initially, it was difficult for them to understand my words and actions, but over time, I improved and was able to form a strong friendship with them.

LO4: Before, I used to spend my weekends without much productive activities, but after participating in the Sunday sessions with the organization, I felt motivated to make the best of my weekends. I was an active part of the planning process and made sure to attend these events regularly for 4-5 months, both online and in-person. That is how I was committed to this NGO.

LO5: Cooperation is an essential aspect of a team and I was one of around 10-15 volunteers who participated in this new experience. As this was new for many of us, we supported each other, shared ideas and communicated effectively to ensure the smooth operation of the Sunday sessions.

LO6: Down syndrome is a prevalent genetic disorder worldwide. Although my contributions may seem small, they still have a significant impact on the individuals within the community. Being part of this organization that works towards a global cause was a deeply meaningful experience for me.

I put effort into being approachable and creating a supportive atmosphere for those with down syndrome so they feel included and valued.
