FSMUN 8.0

Organising events has always been on my list, FSMUN was a great opportunity and I took advantage of it. Model United Nations is a mimick of the actual United Nations which provides such an adequate debating atmosphere for the delegates. Organising this formal conference is no easy task and an entire committee is required to make it a success. I was part of the organising committee. My role was to monitor the committee sessions and lead the on-day volunteers on the final dates. Apart from that during the organising process, I was more into logistics and decor.

LO2: The biggest challenge was to organize the event in the given time frame, we had very limited time to manage everything. The prints for the decor came at the last moment due to some reason and it was very difficult to complete the decor within a day’s time. Each one of us was responsible for whatever work was appointed to us, there was a lot of stress and pressure above our heads. This was my first experience as an organizer. For this conference to run smoothly, I had to make sure that all on day volunteers knew their jobs and that they sat at their assigned committees. Every volunteer made a plea to me regarding their preferences for the committees. They wanted to sit according to their choices but I couldn’t have allowed that. There were differences of opinions among my team members and that even led to arguments at times. To overcome this, I kept switching their committees so that even they get to experience different sessions and the number of conflicts arising within the team, reduces. Other than that I made sure to be firm and bold when I gave instructions to them and I even set some ground rules in case they surpassed any disciplinary boundaries.

LO4: I was looking after the prints that were needed for the MUN. I had provided all the images to the school’s print team but due to some technical issue they couldn’t get it done till two days before the MUN. We finally got the prints two days before the MUN, we had to get them cut, that took a day. The next day we had to write all the certificates, and do all the decor that was related to the print job. It got very hectic and at a point I was very tired of the delayed work. But being the head, I had to pull myself and get the work done. It took a lot commitment, perseverance and patience but it was all worth it.

LO5: Working collaboratively has always been easy for me. I’ve always been social and I enjoy talking to new people. Working with people helps you learn things. Every individual has some quality that’s worth adapting and with that thought I always try to make a conversation with unknown people. In the MUN, I had to work with juniors and it was fun. Synergy helps when something this big needs to be carried out.

LO6: MUN is a platform where global issues are discussed. The issues that were catered were, “The issue of global and national security”, “Demilitarisation of MENA”, “Disinvestment and privatisation of public assets”, and “Chemical weapons and their impact on healthcare”. Before this conference, I had very limited or no knowledge about the topics abpoove but these debates helped me learn a lot more than what I already knew.

Learner Profile: Communicator- Such activities cannot be done individually and hence you need to communicate to work better and to obtain better outcomes.
