Teaching the underprivileged children children – CAS project

For our CAS project as a way of giving back to the community we decided on giving back the greatest gift we ever received, the gift of education. My friends and I decided to conduct classes in a school made for the underprivileged, we contacted the principal of the school and understood the problems the kids faced and how the teachers were not very proficient and the knowledge from IB students could help the students learn the topics in more detail and give the students an opportunity to experience a more diverse culture. This teaching experience helped me build as a person as well, as I was not very confident when addressing such a large crowd but this experience helped me overcome that fear and also taught me how to be more patient and how hard being a teacher actually is.

The learning outcomes I covered during the project were,

LO 3:- Me and my 2 other group members talked to the principal in order to decide the curriculum and evaluated our strengths on which topic we could deliver the knowledge we know the best and what could help the students the most. Me and one of my friend are inclined a lot towards physics and my another friend was inclined towards mathematics so we divided the subjects accordingly. We then planned the sessions for each day and how much syllabus we had to cover so that they get to learn better but at the same time the content is not that heavy that students are unable to absorb it. We made notes for the topics we were going to teach and watched some videos before so that we remember the topic completely and there are no misconceptions.

LO 5:- I covered LO 5 as we divided the roles between ourselves and what content will be covered by whom were pre decided before every session and every class to ensure a smooth flow of class. We also had our mock exam coming during the experience so we had very less time to prepare for these sessions but working as a team and helping each other made the experience more productive and fun for us and the children

LO 6:- Quality education is a right everyone should get and is one of the SDG and therefore as a part of the service component we decided on giving the quality education we were provided with to the underprivileged children as well so that they could get equal opportunities as we got. We conducted the sessions in an all girls school which caters to the SDG of gender equality as in most parts of the world women are not given the level of education men have received therefore we decided to teach in an all girls schools so women also get the same opportunity as men.

LO 7:- During out teaching sessions we also helped them in learning new and better techniques which were not there in their syllabus as it would help them largely in being better at studies and help them understand the concepts in more depth in detail helping them in their further studies.
