The most challenging part of entire community service was conversing in their preferred language and making them understand what we are trying to say. Proper communication was very important for smooth conduct of the sessions. Although, it was difficult to communicate, them understanding and enjoying the game was a sign of a successful community service and goals achieved. To overcome the challenge, more often than not, we volunteers used to include sign and symbols while conversing with the children to convey our ideas more coherently. This alternative was very important and necessary.
We had divided our sessions into two halves. First 1 hour was dedicated to game related activities, such as frisbee throws and drills. The last half and hour was dedicated to fun activities and games involving a disc. This way, we were able to strike a balance between fun activities and practice. Also, during activities, each volunteer was hand over a group of children to teach. The children would remain same for each of the six sessions. This way we were able to gain control of the situations better.
Knowing about global issues around the globe helps me be in my personal growth as an IB learner and becoming a part of an inclusive community. However, here in this case, being aware about the social issue (inequality) helps me make informed choices during the sessions which enhances the comradery between us as volunteers and children.
My work in this CAS experience makes me feel like as if I have contributed to the global community by serving the society and the needy. There were no ethical issues except for that we as volunteers were there to make them feel comfortable and loved and accepted and not low just because they were underprivileged.
