From a very young age, I have been an avid reader and always admired some people’s ability to write. However, I had never personally had the opportunity to work on my own creative writing skills. So when I came across a short course by Mr. Garauv Moonga, a professional author, it highly appealed to me. Mr. Moonga has written a number of books and has a very exuberant personality with a great passion for teaching, so learning from him was nothing but amazing.
During the workshop, we went through 12, one and a half hour sessions over the span of 6 weeks working on activities, discussing different situations, strategies, and ways of thinking about how and what to write (LO 4). Every session we wrote a short piece and got it reviewed by both our mentor and our fellow writers, it helped develop collaboration and communications skills and enabled us to create a short book by the end of the workshop which contained all our short stories (LO 5). Due to the workshop being such a huge time investment, I had to manage my time effectively, in order to achieve this I came up with a strategy, I would consciously make note of observing as many things around me as I could such that by the end of the day I had a list of things which sparked ideas to write about, this saved a lot of time as thinking with provided prompts was exceptionally faster (LO 2 and 3). One other thing that came into consideration during this experience was ethics involved while writing, a lot of times I was compelled to go online and reference other’s works into my own to make the process about coming up with ideas simpler. During this time maintaining an ethical conduct was integral to completing the book we were tasked to write (LO 7).
Overall, it was a highly enjoyable experience I developed significantly in my collaboration, critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, and time management skills. It also helped me get into a daily habit of writing short pieces of things all around us we usually take for granted, which not only allows me to keep improving on the skills I developed but also appreciate how creativity can immerge from the simplest of things.
