This summer vacation I went on a 6 day trekking trip to Deo Tibba Base camp, organised by Adventure World. This was definitely an experience I will keep with me forever. The days spent in the mountains gave me a lot of time to ponder about my life, my goals, my dreams and I got to make many memories with friends which I will remember.
L1.Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I saw that my strength was my balance, even in 6 days I did not fall even once. I was able to use the walking stick to support myself. Sometimes I took the help of people nearby when crossing a rock or waterway. My area for growth is endurance, I often got tired very quickly and I really need to push myself to increase my stamina so that if I go on such a trip in future I can complete the trek without getting as exhausted and enjoy the whole experience.
L2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
I am not someone who is physically fit or works out regularly hence the biggest challenge for me was to wake up each morning and do the trek of 3-4 hours to the next campsite. Since we were a group of 30 people I could not ask everyone to stop regularly and I had to push myself and my body to keep up the pace. Staying at an altitude of 12000 feet, there were some medical problems as well like having fever. In such times, I overcame the problem by taking help from the instructors and necessary precautions.
L4. Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Perseverance was of utmost importance in this CAS experience, once we started climbing up I did not have the option to go back down, we had to reach the topmost campsite and that required a lot of perseverance. On day 4 of the trip, I twisted my ankle and I was finding it very difficult to walk that evening. But the next morning I showed commitment and did the trek albeit at a slower pace than usual. The motivation from friends and the instructors helped me to cross these hurdles.
L7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
I did not have network or battery during this trip so my phone was essentially rendered useless. This gave me the opportunity to live in the present and be more connected with my surroundings. Hence, I was able to actually reconsider my actions and the effect it has. When we would leave any campsite I would be careful to pick up the trash and keep the surroundings clean so that the beauty of the mountains could stay intact.
Overall, this was a great experience for me and something I would definitely like to do again. It was simultaneously exhilarating yet a much needed peaceful break in nature from usual life as a DP student. The sights I got to witness on this trip made all the pain and exhaustion worth it.
