Donating old clothes

(LO- 6, LO- 7)

I wanted to help people around me who I find are needy and someone who require support. Therefore, I decided to help my helpers at home who are always ready to work for us at any given point of time. Perhaps, it was my turn to help them the way I could. Since they cannot always afford to by new and fashionable clothes, I decided to donate the ones which are not used by me anymore but none the less, are in good condition. At their home, there are small children who are younger to me and they can wear these clothes. After all I’m sure this would bring few smiles and happy faces in their home.

The global issue focused here is reducing inequalities and no poverty. This is an example of a family not being able to purchase the needs of daily life and are struggling to run their house. Although this is at local level, on Earth, there are so many poor African and Asian countries where the citizens are not able to afford daily needs of their lives such as clean water and sanitation, quality education, food – clothes – shelter and more because the government doesn’t have funds in their pockets.

These issues are very widespread on global level and they have to resolved with more increasing developed and developing countries in the world. The developed and developing countries should provide medical and financial aid to underdeveloped countries and should look to raise the bar. All of this, I was taught in Integrated Humanities which is an IBMYP subject. If these global issues are not taken care of then that day won’t be far where more than half of the world population goes under the poverty line. These are not good signs.

Having knowledge about these global issues contributes to my growth as a youth who is looking to bring a positive change in the society and someone who is concerned about the future of our generation in this world. Moreover, knowing about such global issues around the globe, increases my knowledge and shows me the reality of where do we stand as a unit regards to sustaining our Earth and how these global issues have an impact on an individual’s life as well.

In my CAS experience, I feel that at least to some extent, I have looked to take an initiative in the right direction regarding the global issue which I wanted address. Although this is just a small step, but a step in the right direction feels very positive and promising that hopefully in my future I will be able to contribute to my society in a good way through some or the other way at higher levels.

The ethical issue involved in this activity is inequality and unemployment because it leads to poverty in the society. Due to this, people cannot afford daily needs such as food, water, shelter and clothes. However, the ethical issues affect people like us in an indirect manner as these people turn into labors in search for jobs and sufficient salary to run their house. As a result, they work for the people with more money. The issue made me feel quite helpless because this has become a cycle of which even I am indirectly a part of.

Additionally, I believed that the ethical issue of inequality and unemployment could be resolved by reducing the unequal distribution of per capita income. However, after completing the CAS experience, I figured that these issues are all part of our life cycle and it is one from which we can’t come out.
