CAS reflection – Calisthenics

Calisthenics is a very new form of exercise that has recently been introduced in Surat. It entails making attractive movements and improving general physical strength by utilising core strength and body weight. I had a certain degree of fitness from playing basketball and going to the gym on a daily basis, but I wanted to learn a new form of exercising, and callisthenics appeared to suit the bill. As a result, I began training with Coach Amit Sharma and witnessed substantial improvements in arm strength, learning new exercises, increasing difficulty levels, and general body flexibility and stability.

LO 1 : Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

  • During the first few classes, the coach made us do usual exercises which helped us understand our strengths and weaknesses. That made the process easier, knowing my weaknesses I directed my attention to them, specifically. This focus led to a visible improvement which improved my health and body strength.

LO 2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

  • Workout was something I used to do at times, but with the daily classes, it became a persistent challenge for me. Although, I had some experience in yoga, which had increased my flexibility and that did help me during this course. Building my strength was difficult, and although I haven’t entirely achieved my goal, but by attending classes regularly and diligently practicing did help me achieve my goal to a great extent. It feels motivating to have come so near to my goal, taking up challenges is satisfying, it gives you a sense of accomplishment which is rewarding enough. Developing my body strength will be helpful in the present and the future as fitness is important for our health. It was empowering to have learned the skills and I want to continue beyond the challenge to feel empowered again.

LO 3 : Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

  • When it comes to organizing, I scheduled my classes and work according to my training session so I could attend it regularly and give the course sufficient time. I quite often make ‘to-do’ lists to stay on track and to stay organised hence planning was not a challenge for me however initiating was a challenge. Because my training consists of intensive workouts, it drained me out hence I faced difficulty during the initiation process. Now that I have done this for a long time, it sure gives me the courage to take up new challenges believing that I can accomplish it and organize myself like I did this time.

LO 4 : How commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

  • The timings for the classes were 7 am onwards, as I  am not an early riser it was difficult for me to attend these classes regularly. But I was committed towards my goal which made me push myself to wake up early. Even a short break makes it harder and painful to do the exercises, hence persistence was essential. Without perseverance and commitment, I would have to begin from scratch every now and then. Hence I made it a point, to be regular and to commit to the classes.
