Being an animal lover and having a pet, I have always been connected with animals and wanted to do something for them. My sister recommended I join an NGO called Care Club, which provides dog food to members who can then give them to stray dogs. I joined them and started giving dog food to stray dogs in my neighbourhood and continued this for a month as, after that, a local started giving them dog food. In this experience, I provided food to stray dogs two times a day for a month.
Since this experience required me to give dogs food two times a day, I had to manage my time and make my timetable flexible. In the morning I would go to the designated place and give them food, after that I had my school, so I had to get up earlier than usual. The second time I gave them food was around 6 PM so that the timings are balanced according to a dog’s eating schedule. I am not an extremely organised person, my usual timetable is flexible and can be changed according to my needs. This is why this was a challenge for me.
In this experience, I had to be consistent with my routine and give dogs their food 2 times a day. It was quite difficult for me to manage this and keep it up for a whole moth, including weekends and I had to miss or postpone some of my plans made for that month. Being an unorganised person, it proved to be challenging and made me realise why being consistent was important. If I stopped providing them food for 1 day, they would starve and that would defeat the purpose of trying to keep them from starving. I understood why being consistent was important and this experience made me a bit more organised that before.
Due to the number of residents increasing in my city, the number of residential areas also increased exponentially. Because of this, the animals living here have even less space to live in and don’t get any food, water or shelter. Making this an extremely alarming issue. While it may not be important for some of us, considering the lifestyle of the wildlife around us is important as well. We need to take care of the nature we exploited and the animals we were forced to leave. Saying this, keeping the dogs we forced to leave, hungry is not an ethical right. Focusing on this ethical issue, I decided to work on it and at least give food to the dogs who live around me. My ethical values are still the same and are not going to change.
