For this CAS experience, I wanted to teach my maid’s child the basics of painting. Art is known to be an expensive subject in anyone’s life. Art supplies are not something that is cheap and affordable, especially for people working below the poverty line or making a living every day.
I chose to do this because my maid would bring her son to our house when she came. And her son would always ask me questions like what I was doing when I would be painting. I could sense that the son of the maid was interested in art as well as he would often hover in my room when I would paint because she would be so interested and watch me do it. So this made me think that I could teach him how to paint and the basics of painting as it spikes her interest and I like art too.
Here, in this CAS experience, I have demonstrated LO1 (Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth) as I realized that my own strength, in this case, is the fact that I know enough about art and painting that I can teach someone some basic art skills. and that will help me grow as a person and allow me to help other individuals as well. It will help me grow as a person as helping someone creates a sense of belonging in me and it makes me feel like I am becoming a better person.
Here, in this CAS experience, I have also demonstrated LO3 (initiate and plan a CAS experience) for this cas, I had to plan out an entirely 3-week long schedule where I would use my Saturdays and Sundays for these three weeks to teach art to my maid’s child. This was because the maid comes to my house in the morning during my school hours and leaves when I come back, so utilizing my weekends were beneficial. I made sure that I used at least 1 hour to teach art to the child and then if he wanted to do more, I would assist him through it if the time permitted.
Here, in this CAS experience, I have also demonstrated LO7 (Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions) I made sure to ask for the consent of the (maid) mother of the son I will be teaching and the son himself, I also made sure that I gave him enough freedom while teaching art, letting him choose his approach towards the learning and considering that he had little to no art background, I made sure to not be judgemental and made sure he was not feeling judged either. I also made sure that he did not feel stuck anywhere and gave him to liberty to decide the amount of time he wanted to do art with me while considering practicality, as I will not be free the whole day and at least an hour of teaching was scheduled to be done.
The learner profile I am displaying here is open-minded as I am being open-minded towards the child and I am helping him learn his passion, and his interest while making sure that I bring no judgments and condescension to the table while teaching him.
