Zero hunger is one of the SDG goals yet to be achieved. Yet, millions of people still face hunger and poverty. My group realized the need to help those who still sleep empty stomach, and helping even a little could bring some change in this world. Hence, we planned to set up a baked goods sales stall at Word Wise by Monsoon Musings which was a literary event gathering poets from around the school to explore the Shakespeare in them. This helped us gain a larger audience to set up a stall for and generate higher revenue, which would then be donated to the less privileged.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
This experience was quite challenging for us as we had to prepare baked items for a large audience and charge them money such that we are able to get sufficient donations while taking care of not exploiting our customers. Hence we were also able to develop business skills throughout the project to carry out the operations and marketing of our goods solely, which would also help me in the future to manage to generate profits and also bring change for the society as an entrepreneur.
LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
This experience demanded to supply food in a larger quantity, hence needed a team to work together. We organized ourselves by dividing roles between each other which helped us to manage the large supply easily and efficiently. In the end, this experience taught me the benefits of working as a team and how to organize stuff and manage work efficiently.
LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working with people does get a bit hectic and needs patience and respect for others, because of difference of opinions, this also happened with us while finalizing the menu and the organization we donated the money to, which we handled by being open minded enough to listen to others and respecting their point of views and reaching to a conclusion which favored all of us. But, working collaboratively, helped us reduce the workload and create a greater impact.
LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Millions of people in this world are facing hunger, and are sleeping with an empty stomach. Our team realized the importance of this issue and understand how privileged we are, but also feel for the ones not. Hence we planned to engage with this social issue, by collecting donations for the underprivileged, and filling their stomachs, by selling food to an audience and raising sufficient funds to at least help a considerable number of people.
LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
This experience helps us to understand the role of one as a human to help others and consider the ethics of one’s actions such as helping, on others. Furthermore, this experience has helped to bring smiles, on our faces, on the faces of our customers and also the underprivileged, which will encourage us to do stuff like this in the future as well.
Throughout this experience, I was able to develop the learner profile reflective, communicator and caring, as it demanded to reflect on the impacts of our actions and effectively communicate in a group and also care for the underprivileged. This activity has really impacted the underprivileged as we tried to collect funds to help the needy with the help of this bake sale, which helped me to reflect upon my role as a human and a part of the society to help the one living in it, in all ways we can. Which probably will also encourage me to repeat such bake sales at different places and now even in front of a bigger audience to collect higher funds to help the needy.
