Beach cleaning

The Dumas beach is the pride of Surat but is littered with trash and has very ill management for a city that is the second cleanest in India behind Indore. The heavy trash is the result of the ignorance of the people of Surat. The shore of Dumas is filled with food stalls, people buy food from the stalls and eat It next to the water enjoying the beautiful sunset and horizon but when they get up they leave the trash as it is and don’t clean behind themselves. The trash lies as it is and when high tides start the trash is swept into the ocean by the waves causing marine creatures like fishes to get stuck inside them or choke on them when they try to eat it. Plastics do not decompose in water for a very long period of time and they are toxic to waterbodies as well. Therefore the trash goes a long way and largely affects the life underwater while also degrading the beauty of the beach itself.

LO 3:- “initiate and plan a CAS experience”

I researched and thought about the day on which the most number of people visit the beach as on that day the pollution level would be the highest as more people will leave trash laying as it is. The obvious answer was Sunday, as it is a holiday a lot of people decide to enjoy the beach view and sound of the waves while having their dinner. Therefore I decided to go on early Monday mornings before school time and clean the beach.

LO 4:- commitment to and perseverance

I followed the schedule for one whole month, every Monday for a month I went to the beach early in the morning and cleaned the beach as much as I could as per the allowance of time no matter what the weather is or how much trash was present I tried to pick up as much trash as I possibly could. The total weighed around 15kg of trash after end of one month

LO 6:- engagement with issues of global significance

Currently as per 2022, there are 51 trillion microscopic pieces of waste in the ocean which weigh around 269,000 tons. Clearly the problem of trash in ocean is a global issue and almost every country on and off the shore contributes to the production of waste thrown in the ocean. Many factories of various companies dump their highly toxic chemical waste in the ocean or rivers polluting all the water around the area of impact causing a massive danger to the life in the area and people/animals that use the water from that waterbody as drinking water . No government can clean of the waste out so instead we have to take individual steps to clean the already existing waste and reduce the spillage of plastic and other waste on beaches or near other water bodies.

LO 7:- Waste cleaning and management is an ethical choice and practice that should be practiced throughout the world by every country and every individual as its you where the change starts from and governments should not be solely blamed for the increasing trash in the ocean as a human we should care for the marine life and make ethical choices like not throwing plastic and other waste in the ocean.
