Community Service (Activity-Service)

Educating and learning is the biggest part of childhood nurturing. In my school (fountainhead school) I got the opportunity to teach frisbee to unprivileged children. Frisbee is an ultimate sports game played by teams on an international level. Teaching frisbee to people from government school was a very great experience for me as the skills which I taught and drills which I made them learn have helped in their physical endurance and have also increased their strength.

I have identified my strengths and weakness while teaching frisbee to unprivileged children which helps me to gain LO1. My strengths when I was teaching frisbee to unprivileged students were that I made perfect drills and exercises so that the children do not get any injuries throughout the sessions, as well as children, don’t face any problems. My weakness was that I couldn’t explain to children verbally how the drills works and what to do. This was because the children were unprivileged due to they don’t know the national language and I am bad at the local language and communicating with them was a weakness for me. As I am aware of my weakness, I will improve to do better by learning the local language.

Another learning outcome that I have gained is LO2. I faced challenges like communicating with them, making the small-aged children learn about frisbee, getting assured that they are learning everything, and connecting with them. I overcame this challenge by learning a few sentences in the local language and asking my friends who know the local language very well. The skill of learning the local language will be very useful for me in the future so that I can connect to every local people here. It is important for us to learn new skills so that we are more knowledgeable and intellectual and the knowledge is never wasted so we never know where the skill will help us in the future.

I have gained another learning outcome which is LO3. I initiated and planned things for the children. I organized myself by knowing how to manage the time of the session so that children can learn as much as possible. I made a schedule for children to do the exercise/warm-up, drills, have breaks, and have fun games. I had 1 hour 30 minutes sessions on the weekend so I had to plan how things will work out, how smooth will the session go, and how much children will learn. Planning and initiating both were difficult because challenges were there but it was successful. I never knew I could teach someone a sport, that is a unique skill I have myself. It is important to know how to plan and initiate things because it helps us to know what comes up and how much are children learning.

Another learning outcome that I have gained in this experience is LO4. The challenges mentioned above made the activity difficult because frustrations were arising as the children didn’t know the national language. But the commitment and perseverance were required to provide useful and correct knowledge about the game mentally and physically. It is not easy for me to be committed as I get disappointed very easily, but the small children had a smile on their faces and had lots of fun throughout the session which made my commitment to the session also make me feel happy.

Another learning outcome that I have gained in this experience is LO5. In the community service program, I had my friends with me to collaborate while teaching them frisbee. We worked collaboratively which made the session successful. Working with others is easy for me as we tend to gain more knowledge and it was easy for me in this session as well. All my friends were collaborative which never made me feel difficult. To work together collaboratively is important because we share different ideas which helps us to know more and working together helps us to identify people’s nature and values. Teamwork builds up strong relationships with each other and helps individuals to live with someone’s likes and dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses.

The learning outcome that I have gained in this experience is LO6. There are issues of global significance as well. As the children are unprivileged they have no knowledge and idea of different sports and games which is an issue because sports and games build up physical endurance as well as better nurturing. Knowing about global issues contributes to me by getting knowledge of the problems around the world. As I am aware of the global issue, I have taken an action to help the problem get over.

Last but not least, the last learning outcome experienced is LO7 as well. This is because ethics were one of an important role while teaching any sport to anyone. Rules and regulations for teaching them were taken into consideration which showcases ethics. Also, the spirit was taught to the children so that the players stay in their ethics when playing the sport/game. This issue makes me feel good because the spirit in the game also describes how the player is to an extent.

I developed learner profiles like thinker, knowledgeable, communicator, and principled. This CAS experience is linked to the service I am providing to the unprivileged children as well as the activity planned for them. This benefitted the unprivileged children by getting knowledge of new sports/games. My learning has helped this community because I made them learn new things. I achieved success because all the children learned something new and were happy. I made myself enjoy myself with them because even I was playing with them. I learned how to make people learn about different things. I would change the drills because advanced drills would help the grow and rise more effectively. I wish to contribute more by conducting more sessions.
