CAS Entry #3 – Crumple (Paper Making)

Crumple was an event organised by few of our peers, it was an event where we would be recycling old newspapers in order to create brand new, fresh pieces of paper. It was a fun activity to do and the event also implemented sustainable practices.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Before going for this event, I had just a brief idea of what we were going to do. I had seen a few videos which showed how easy the entire process would be. However, when we actually reached school and saw the set-up I was quite baffled. There were so many containers filled with papers and so many with water, I had no clue how we were supposed to do all of this within the time span of 1 hour. Slowly as we were taught how we’re supposed to be using the equipment and making the paper it was easy to get the hang of it.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Crumple took place early in the morning, which required me to wake up around 1 hour and 30 mins earlier than I was supposed to. Showing up to the event was a commitment that I had to make and after I had signed up I wasn’t sure I could back out. Even the next morning, I was ready to let it go and just sleep that extra hour but I had to push myself through as I had already committed to it.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
In this volunteering experience we used old newspapers and recycle them through our bare hands to create new pieces of paper, this was an alternative method and no chemicals and other harmful materials will be used. Through this event we also wanted to promote the idea of recycling paper itself to create new paper, the method was quite easy and could be done at home too, even though it didn’t bring much significance globally we still wanted to do as much as we could.
