Teaching Self-defence

I have been learning Taekwondo and Mix Martial Arts for more than 6 years and I also have completed my black belt in taekwondo, I have been taught many techniques for self-defence and many ways to protect myself from physical attacks and this is why I would like to teach my friends these techniques so that they can protect themselves when the need arises. To make sure that the techniques taught to them are not used for personal benefits, I would teach them only the basics of self-defence and remove advanced techniques which could cause serious damage to the opponent.

Teaching people is something I am poor at and this experience was all about teaching and communication. Since these were my friends, I could freely talk with them and help them overcome their issues. Since this is a subject I have been learning for more than 6 years and am proficient at, I could clear their doubts without any problem and can be counted as one of my strengths. Knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses are important and can help them develop themselves further, this is true for my case as well, I need to improve on my communication skills to help my clients clear all their doubts and make them proficient in it.

Teaching is a challenge for me as I have never taught anyone anything before and this was my first time teaching something. Since self-defence is a rather easy topic to make someone understand it wasn’t that difficult to teach, just one demonstration was enough to help everyone get a grasp of what they are expected to learn. To overcome this challenge, I taught everyone individually and helped them understand the moves and techniques by demonstrating them every time, this is because visual stimuli are much more effective than audio stimuli. Through this experience, I gained some skills in teaching and techniques that help everyone learn faster.

To help everyone learn this efficiently, I took these training sessions every 2 days for a month and to manage that I had to change my routine and to teach something new in every class, I had to prepare it beforehand so that things don’t get repetitive and I don’t forget anything. It wasn’t easy for me to manage it, but still, it was a fruitful experience that helped me gain management skills.

In this experience, I was supposed to teach people how to protect and defend themselves from physical attacks and keep a safe distance from them. To ensure that they don’t use it for personal gain and hurt someone, they are not supposed to, I avoided teaching them any harmful attacks and made defence the priority for them. Therefore my main intention was not to teach them how to knock someone out but to maintain a safe distance and max to max, make someone incapable of moving for some time. This way I ensured that these techniques are not used for personal benefits and can not hurt someone severely.

All in all, my intentions for this experience was fulfilled and my friends had learned basic self-defenses to protect themselves. Through this experience, I was able to gain teaching skills and communication skills.

In order to respect their privacy, I blurred their faces.
