Making a Nest Box (Service + Creativity)

There are a lot of sparrows I witness in my backyard and I have seen my mom putting bread for sparrows which inspired me to land a helping hand by making a nest out of a used box for sparrows. This can be considered as a service to the sparrows because I created a safe habitat for their stay as well as towards the environment because I created the nest from a recyclable box of Amazon which is a step towards saving resources and money. I firstly watched a few videos of making a Sparrow nest box but then I decided to create my own design comprising of a large hole, a creative illustration on the top of the box, of a sparrow sitting on the tree, and other things which also cater to the “creativity” aspect of CAS.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

In the process of making the nestbox, I had to keep myself organized in managing time and resources because I already had a lot of study tasks and revisions so I had to plan this experience well. Although, I failed at the same because I spent an entire day creating the product making me introspect upon my lack of time-management skills. Hence, I learned that I have to give set time for specific tasks and apply different strategies of planning and initiating activities.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Through this experience, I was able to cover the global issue of “excessive wastage” that leads to overflowing of landfill sites, emitting harmful gases like methane, and causing global warming or a threat to sustainability, therefore, generating waste is a serious issue at the global level. On my behalf, I managed to use the resources well with minimal waste such as pasting the plain, backside of past years’ worksheets on the outer part of the box. This also contributed to my personal growth because I feel very encouraged and fortunate to be able to perform a responsibility towards planet Earth. Apart from wastage, extinction of species is also a critical concern especially of sparrows because I learned that sparrows are gradually declining because of loss of habitat caused by rapid urbanization. Thus, I did this service to help sparrows by providing them with a safe and suitable shelter.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

It was the right choice for me to provide shelter to Sparrows as a responsible human being because my action was actually meaningful and it motivated me to become a more caring person towards living organisms as they can’t voice their needs. Hence, my action was morally right considering that it was beneficial for the birds as well as aided in my personal growth.

Final takeaway – Apart from doing something for the right purpose, I learned to involve myself in such creative activities because this activity brought a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment when I was actually making a creative house from a used box of my own design. I developed my fine motor skills and creative thinking skills which can be applied in various other ways or activities for our pleasure or for the betterment of society.
