Description of the activity and experience :
I am genuinely very concerned about the kind of mess people are making on this planet by not managing the waste properly. People litter everywhere which is why clean-up drives are very important. I took all my friends to Dumas, which is one of the beaches in surat, and we started cleaning there. We were able to collect 4 full-size plastic bags on Day 1, and 7 full-size plastic bags on Day 2. Global warming is a very concerning issue for the future of mankind which is why it is very necessary for all of us to stop littering around. And throwing garbage on the beaches also disturbs the life underwater very critically. Now that I am aware of this global issue, I can actually change things around here, even though at a small scale but it’d be better than nothing.
Learning outcome 1 :
I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses :
Strengths
- I am very good at leading events. In this experince, I had to manage everything on my own as I was the one who was taking my friends for the beach clean up. The whole event, both the days went off very smoothly.
Weakness
- Sometimes, I can be very rigid when it comes to making decisions. For this event, few people suggested that we should cover some other area for the clean up, and I stuck with my decision and didn’t take into consideration the other opinion.
Learning outcome 4 :
- What made this activity difficult where perseverance or commitment was necessary? How did that make you feel?
The activity was difficult because it required a lot of patience and social skills and I happen to lack both of them. I am a very impatient person personally and I need everything to be done in my style which also made this activity difficult. This was a short-term experience which is why commitment was not a very important key but even though while we were on the beach cleaning up, commitment for completing the cleanup was necessary. This made me feel like a better person who is working towards a cause, be it on a smaller scale, I felt proud that I was not out there sitting and doing nothing.
Final takeaway :
The thing that I learned from this was that any small action towards making this world a better place to live in is always appreciated. This beach cleanup made me identify my strengths and weaknesses while working in groups. I also learned how it is high time for all of us to take a stand for our environment. The learner profile that I displayed was caring and reflective. Also, this activity brought a sense of accomplishment and joy to me.
