CAS project: Freshers day

Grade 12 students came up with the idea of giving a “Freshers party” to the 11 graders for entering the Diploma program. I was part of the Organizing committee. Being a part of the organizing committee comes with the responsibility of a successful event, cost-effective event, and cooperation with members of the Organizing committee. This was a pilot student-led project. The event happened in two parts. First, on 21 of July 2022 welcome dance and treasure hunt, and on the 8th of July 2022, an after-school party was arranged by only eleven of us. The planning started on 7 June 2022. All Freshers on their first day of school were welcomed by a flash Mob of around 5 minutes. Later at the end of the day, we arranged a scavenger hunt for them. At the different locations in the school, there were clues for the freshers. On the day of the event 8 July 2022, We even invited them to their break slot and reminded them about the location.

Identify your own strengths and develop areas for growth
It was easy for me to work in a group. I am good at collaborating and communicating in groups for events. For this event there were multiple teachers to contact for approvals at that time it was quite easy to persuade them to pitch and permit us to do the same. Taking up responsibilities is what I like doing since organizing such events is something that I am passionate about so when it comes to responsibility and hence this quality help divide the work and help. When it was the last day for preparation loads of work to do and no time but without panicking and calmly we divide roles assuring that it was completed and managed to tick all the to-do list tasks. But on the other hand, for keeping the treasure hunt card, I remember that the boys wanted to play and we had a long to-do list to be completed so I got pissed at them and so did the other girls and we had an argument and I am short tempered at such instances but in the end, we concluded as a win-win situation where boys after completing their task could go. Additionally, when the rejection of ideas comes it is difficult for me to think of a new idea, I get restricted to the one thought earlier so ya backup ideas are something I am not good with.

Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken in developing new skills
While preparing for events was like experiencing a roller coaster. There were days when everything was set and days when it was exhausting. From school, we weren’t provided slots so managing time for dance practice and matching all 11 schedules, and making use of that time at best was challenging, cooperation skills developed due to this. It was difficult to come to a consensus where all of us agreed on the same idea, due to which delaying the decision led to a waste of time instead some tasks that could be completed. There were times when we were all frustrated about the party and didn’t want to work since we had different assignments to submit. This helped me develop the skill of managing tasks and learner profile balanced to maintain my studies, party, social, sleep, and physical health. The main challenge was to complete tasks and all of them should suffice in the budget and be approved by the teachers. This help develops the real-life skill of managing accounts and daily expenses. Lastly, while all of this we were supposed to ensure that no resource is wasted and for gifting them we used the extra worksheets that the school had and ordered resources in exact amounts so that nothing is misused which leads to goals declared by UN Sustainable Cities and Communities, a small step taken by us for sustainable community and city. As a disadvantage, the aesthetics were disregarded and we had to stick up to the number of resources available in school for the decoration of survival kits and whatever was best possible so which restricted our ideas but anyways all of it was managed.

Initiate and plan a CAS experience
I made a To-do list for the task in order to not miss out on any task and complete all of it, every small task was mentioned. This helped me organize my regular studies and side by side the party arrangements as well. Usually, I try to be an organized person but sometimes fail to be one the idea of making a to-do list was new and helped me a lot to plan out things. Initiating this idea was easy but planning the event in such a way that it abides by the policy plus the juniors enjoy it and the budget is also taken into consideration. While initiating also it was difficult to sort out ideas cause initially there were many rough ideas that were needed to segregate. Planning things and initiating was difficult but yes it helped align our work and made it easier to work in the flow and this skill is helpful in the future as well. This helps keep you motivated to work since you are aware of the final product that you want and planning it out will give you steps to the main goal, making it smooth.

Commitment to and perseverance
For this activity, the commitment to completing work on time in order to make it a successful event and the commitment to managing time for practicing dance was very important. Since we weren’t provided with slots from school work we had to take out time in free slots and from after-school time so going to each dance practice shows our dedication to this event. Personally, I usually commit to things easily but when it comes to meeting those commitments it gets difficult for me to meet that commitment which ends up in compromising when there is a group task there is motivation, and it’s bound to happen that the commitments are common and so I end up meeting all of it without compromising. But I believe showing commitment and perseverance is a way of showing the amount of interest you have in a particular activity. More commitment and perseverance show a higher interest in the individual in the activity. Most people initiate tasks that have their interests which leads to fulfilling commitment.

Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
This activity was wholesome of learning different skills. As a core member, I learned to manage events and also learned to communicate effectively since we invited juniors for the fresher’s party on the day of the event, then welcomed them through the dance of 5- 6 min where in we hyped them up and the choreography and all of it was done collaboratively which made the work easier yet difficult to figure out the best idea out of all. For the scavenger hunt for location eleven minds were running for clues of different locations of the school this collaboration showed that synergy and working together leads to innovative and the best ideas.

Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Since it was a school event we weren’t allowed to use our phones on school premises, but some of us bought phones for school and we didn’t even submit the phones and clicked photos in the washroom and posted them on Instagram and somehow teachers were aware of it and we were called and told about it and then we apologized this happen on the day when the juniors were welcome by Flashmob and later treasure hunt. After that, I learned anything to be done should be done considering the ethics. The next event that followed was the party, which ethically made the choice of taking permission for phones for the party which was after school. As our wrong choice action was unethical teachers doubted us and may not trust us, which could also impact the event. However, the teachers were kind enough to accept our apologies and allow us to continue the preparations. Then all of us decided that the choices that we make during this event will be ethically right from our end those actions shall not negatively impact the activity or community. This mistake helped me recognize the ethics that shall be followed in my regular life and the choice of actions shall be wise. On the other hand, the ethical choice we made.

Concluding, through all of this communicator-learner profile was developed, some mistakes were done through which recognization of ethics and reconsideration of the choices we make. This activity gave me a sense of accomplishment to me and enjoyment since once the party ended we had DJ and as treat, I enjoyed the DJ to the fullest and treated myself to a delicious lunch/dinner that was made and decided by the core committee. This was a successful event since the juniors appreciated us so did the teachers our supervisors also wrote us small messages of appreciation and a green flag for the same.
