Examinations in the 10th standard are considered crucial and students tend to get tense during that period of time. No doubt teachers are the best guides but peer guidance always helps. Peer Learning Assistants(PLA) is a program that requires volunteers from grade 11 to have one on one sessions with students in the younger grades in subjects they are struggling with or need help with. I was a volunteer for a year and was assigned one student from grade 10. I successfully helped her in subjects like Mathematics, Integrated Humanities, and literature by conducting online meets, one-to-one offline sessions, and text messages. I have solved her doubts, reviewed her progress, cleared her concepts, and given her some tips for the final examinations.

LO 1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for growth

When my friends used to ask me doubts in class and after my explanation, they used always appreciated that I teach really well but I haven`t really been involved in a service that involves teaching in a formal way. I initially struggled with developing patience as per the capability of the student and had to repeat things again and again, but I developed patience and enhanced my already existing skills.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

The challenges were unmatching schedules in the daytime because of the difference in timetables, so meeting offline or scheduling sessions became difficult but keeping perseverance we somehow managed to schedule sessions and night. For small doubts, we figured that texts were the most effective. I developed perseverance as well as problem-solving skills. To add, there were certain times when I had to repeat the concept, again and again, this helped me to develop patience and also to reflect and understand the teaching mistakes made me. This improved my communication skills too.

LO6: Quality Education is a very essential sustainable development goal. The average education index of India is 47.7 which is quite low in comparison to other countries. No doubt India has a good education system, but it can still improve a lot. By this peer learning assistance program. I have contributed a little bit to the provision of education with ensured quality as I took all resources from ethical and authenticated websites so I give my best contribution. Hence, CAS provided me an opportunity to contribute to this global problem of Quality Education.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

While reviewing the student’s reports and long submissions, I made sure I only review her work and give her tips, and did not edit her work or do her tasks which could have been against the ethics of schools and would result in academic dishonesty. Hence I followed ethics and only gave her tips and comments.
