Volunteering for Swapper Stop (Service)

Swapper Stop was an event held at Fountainhead by the economics and business management team. The event aimed to promote economic and environmental sustainability by being a center where different goods can be swapped. Most of the time when people don’t find something useful, the item is discarded which results in a huge collection of waste. This event was a chance given to us to avoid the wastage of resources and to instead make them reusable. I contributed to this by volunteering for the decoration of the event.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

While planning, we had to make sure that the event consisted of sustainable invitations and decorations. It was challenging to come up with innovative ideas that were “sustainable” for the event. As a team, we decided to make use of waste resources available at our school and home. We made use of old worksheets, torn chart papers, acrylic colors, plastic bottles, and more, to come up with something creative. This is the first time I’d ever faced a challenge like this and because of it, I was able to develop new skills and expand my creativity.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working collaboratively with people who have similar mindsets is truly rewarding. We were all able to cooperate and conclude on ideas quickly so no time was wasted during the process. All of us were creative-minded and brought something new to the table which enabled us to create beautiful decorations for the event. The beauty of working in a team is that the work is done quickly and efficiently and it brings out the best in everyone without any competition.

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The global issue considered here is the collection and creation of waste. This event focused on spreading awareness about the importance of economic and environmental sustainability with the reduction in wastage. As a volunteer, this experience taught me the importance of sustainability and how I can imply it in my life.

LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

This event leads us to question our decision-making. We should recognize and consider our actions before consuming and wasting goods. This event allowed me to rethink my choices for all the goods I consume and during the event decoration, I was able to carefully make use of every resource while avoiding any form of wastage. I became highly aware of every material I was using and made my choices accordingly.
