Volunteering for Swappers stop. (Creativity and Service)

Swappers stop was an event organized by the Business management and economics team. The event focused on promoting economic and environmental sustainability. The event was based on swapping good quality goods which are not in use and can be swapped by other students. The event included sustainable decorations, sustainable invitations, food, music, and stalls for swapping items. Every time we stop using clothes, jewelry, old board games, shoes, etc we throw them resulting in a huge amount of waste. To avoid waste and to spread awareness this event was executed and can be implemented on a larger scale. I volunteered to make sustainable decorations and send out invitations to the ALTs.

Learning outcome 2:  Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills. Making sustainable decorations and coming up with innovative ideas to make an invitation card. I used different materials which were easily available and were used already. I used old worksheets which had one side completely plain, old torn white chart papers, newspapers, coffee, spray paint, and acrylic paints. I created a marble effect with the help of coffee and brown and yellow paint on worksheets and chart papers. Wrapped it with green spray painted newspaper to make it look like an invitation card. Coming up with different sustainable combinations was difficult but it was something innovative and new for me.

Learning outcome 5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively. I worked collabratively while making the photo booth for the event and the plastic bottle chandelier and it made our task easy with more number of working hands involved. It was easy for us to get the decor ready before the event and was easily assembled. The invitations took me longer time because I was one person creating many same invitation cards. Working collabratively with individuals with similar skill set makes the task more easier compared to working individually.

Learning outcome 6: engagement with issues of global significance. A lot of waste is created and dumped with our consumption and production of goods. The event’s purpose was to promote economic and environmental sustainability and waste creation and dumping is a global issue. Events like swappers stop can be an initiative for reducing waste. This event spreads awareness. It also made me aware that decorations and invitations cards used on our daily basis in event planning can be sustainable.

Learning outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions. We as indivuduals should recongnize and consider our actions before dumping waste and consuming goods and services. This event awares us about this and it makes us subconsiouscly make a decision in favour of sustainability. I was aware about different choices I made for the materials of the decorations with the team and for the invitations and different consequences it would have in a huge event like this and on the environment.
